Default 95 civic overheating!!

I was driving my 95 civic (daily driver) today around 4pm hot day and notice the temp gauge started to rise up while at a stop light. I quickly parked it on the side of the road I turn the car off , popped the hood to see what was wrong and i notice the coolant reservoir bubbling. I let it cool down for awhile, luckly I was carrying a case of water in the back and refilled the radiator and coolant reservoir . I turned it back on and quickly drove it back home. And this time the temperture stayed normal below half, the way it always stands. I check to see if it was the thermostat. but when i unbolted it there wasn't any. so I'm guessing the fans where cooling it down ? and also realized the water disappearing in both coolant and radiator and i checked to see if there was a leak but none. kinda weird i need help PLEASE! I'd appreciate it. do I need a thermostat? or does this end with a "blown head gasket"?!?!?!
