Hey all got a bit of a problem just wondering what I should do…
A keep going with my rebuild.. and make the fastest fwd Honda in Australia.. running crazy amounts of boost..
Or be chuck out this block.. and start again.. and save more money…grr im soo broke…
If you look at the below pictures my Dalton sleeves have been incorrectly installed… well not like the pictures that come in the instruction book.
But we have no idea if this will effect water flow or not or allow the head to seal correctly, and keep blowing head gaskets or not…
Were planing on running anywhere bw 15 – 30 psi on my engine.
Take a close look at the gasket pictures, and also notice one of the water holes doesn’t even line up at all with the gasket.. it seems like its been miss machined directly from Dalton.
Your advice is always greatly appreciated.
Notice the miss lined sleeves

Gasket sitting on top of the sleeves some water holes don’t match up 100%

This hole doesn’t match up what so ever with the head gasket.. should this hole be drilled out ? like iv seen on some darlton sleeves.. ie they have extra holes ?

thanks guys.. but i think the same mechine shop stuffed up twice... they have stuffed up my piston to bore clearance.. me and my mechanic measured it to be 13 thow.. ( 13 thousandths's ) which he thought was massive... but was't sure..
helpppppp grrr
very angry !

There's a machine shop in town (Houston,Tx) that installed a Darton kit a while back. Everything matched up great though. Nevertheless I really don't think the coolant holes will cause any problems, and more or less will not cause a head gasket to blow. That's my opinion.
Good luck!

it should work, but I agree w/ you in being upset. Hard to tell from pictures but it doesn't seem to be a real "pride in your work" type job. Looks more like "halfassing my way through life". I'm **** about internals, so it might just be me. Course everything outside the block can be ghetto rigged to the izzay. Doesn't make a difference to me
If you are a paying a professional machine shop to have that done I would withhold payment until they get it right.
Should have had Benson's do it!

BlkCRX, is it hard to import parts from Japan into Australia? I have no idea what the import/export laws/tarriffs are like.
hmm, run it, blow up, GET FREE stuff(it will cost you in down time) but since you have pics of everything now you can send it back to them and tell them you thought there might be a prob with the install...and now yo u blew up. I think they would treat you right!
but if you dont blow...lucky you?
but it sounds like something will go.(with the .013 clearance)

****, I hope that doesn't happen with mine. The machine shop I am going throuigh has done numerous 7 second Chevies and Fords, but I will be the first Honda motor. The guy does know what he is doing, but it is a little scary
why don't you contact darton? www.darton-international.com
they would probably be able to tell you if their sleeves are installed incorrectly

HOLD EVERYTHING. Where are you measuring the .013 clearance at? If you are measuring the clearance at the top of the piston using a feeler guage between the piston and cylinder, you are ok. If you are measuring at the bottom of the piston skirt to the cylinder you are in big trouble.
I would not be worried about the mismatch in the cooling holes so much as I would be about the deck height of the sleaves. I hope they are flat with the block and will not settle in below the deck. Has your sleave installer done this installation before? Looks like sleaves got installed in the wrong holes in the block or they gave you two left handed sleaves instead of a left and right
If it turns out your block is too big, buy the proper sized piston to match the current block bore. You can special order from JE any diameter piston and you CAN use the pins and rings you already have

hey all
here's a few more pic's of my block... below...
Where taking the block right now to another engine rebuilder to doulbe check the piston to bore clearance.. making sure its measured from .5" from the bottom of the piston. so yeah thanks guys ill keep you posted within 1 hour when we have the results back.. !
As for the block i talked to darlton and they said to re drill the sleeves so the water holes match up correctly...well they said drill any holes that are more than 50% covered, this won't effect strength of the sleeve..
so yeah now im split minded to drill or not 2 dril..but thanks heeps fo all ya advice / help so far ill get real numbers from this 2nd rebuilder online very soon !
Regards James !

From the new pix, it just looks like who ever cut them, did it wrong. I think you are going to be ok whether you cut the cooling holes or not. Sleaves look level also (at least from the pix). Hope clearance comes out ok.
hey Blkcrx....
When you got your darton kit. Didn't you get a jacketed book full of detailed pictures, blueprints + skematics, tolerances, install instructions for the machine shop?
I believe all their kits that aren't installed in one of the install facilities contain
this booklet w/ their sleeve kits. The machine shop should have known something
was way way way off when they did the work.
If you dont have the booklet. Ask for one. They'll send you one for free.

Be careful when assembling man at our shop in houston one of or customers bought a darton sleeve kit and had it installed into here 99 honda prelude motor (open jacket) and when we got it back to intall the internals the crank hit the bottom of the sleeves big no no we had to send it to a local shop to fix that problem just make sure you check that before proceding to put everything together to save you a big headache you'd think that for the money you pay to get it sleeved that they would check that but once again it just goes to show you .Good luck man .-Pdang
I hope this helps to ease your mind, my lsvtec water jackets do not line up totally either...if you hold an ls head gasket to the vtec head, you will see what I am saying...I have run it about 20k miles also but only 1k with a turbo...I personally would just send it back myself though.

hey all good news... i went back to my mechine shop, and they re drilled all the water jacket holes for me for free ( so they should ) so now the head / gasket line up / will flow perfectly !!
we also did the piston to bore clearance measure again, and its spot on perfect at 4.5 thouth ( i think thats 0.0045 ) so im happy now, very happy
Thanks alot for all your wise words and advice, i feel much more happier 2 nite now... then i did last nite.
Regards James
Ps gaping the rings ? should be done to what JE specify ? for forced induction ?
