it could be because it is a 88 accord lxi or it could be a timing issue its good to start simple and work your way up

Yeesch, was this noted during the test drive before you bought it? If so, why did you buy it? If it runs smooth, but low on power, especially at throttle tip-in (coming off idle), the timing belt may be off one tooth.

Dude, drop a motor in it and call it a day. The lxi hatch is a killer chassis IMO, basically a bigger comfier integra. Yes, it would be a lot of work, but it's better than dumping money into the current engine if you plan on keeping the car for a while. A F20 from a 90-93 would be a fitting swap.

yeah really. you can't expect much out of a motor of that age. Anything over 20 years old, motor wise, is usually pretty geriatric. It's usually 'throw the motor out' time by then.

If you can shoehorn a f22 or f23 in there, it'd be a pretty quick little number. Does that care have a 1.8 or a 2.0 ?

Personally i've always wanted to rice out one of those.

Well it's never going to be racer fast, but I wouldn't call it geriatric either. There could be alot of reasons that it is low on power, one already mentioned being timing. The best source on the web for 3rd gen accords is 3geez.com I'm sure that you can find the info you need there by searching.
