89 Accord Loss of Power
I have a carburated 1989 Acord. I have put alot of work into restoring it to good condition this 150.00 car has over 2600.00 into it but I like the way the car looks. I have done all the work myself and love the car on the outside but if yo have ever looked under the hood of a carburated 1989 you can see the resembalance of spegetti around the carburator and selonoid box area. Enough to make the best mechanic shiver. Any way my accord runs great except some times usualy when there is some percipatation it sudenly looses power. doesn't want to tach above 3000 RPM. If you stop the car and shut it off for a minute it will run great again for a bit then it will start acting up after a bit. It doesn't appear to have any ignition miss it runs smooth but no power. It can hardly get out of it s own way. It only hapens when it is raining or spritsing. It almost acts like the secondary isn't opening up at all and you are only running on the primary?? Or maybe it could be something to do with ignition because of the relationship with moisture. Any one have any ideas of what and how to check. Because of the complexity of the engine being vacume controled I have bought the factory shop manual for the car and I do consider myself a pretty good wrench but there are a lot of sytems and subsytems on these carburated hondas. I was hoping maybe some Honda wrench out ther may have heard of or seen a simular problem. Any one got any ideas besides sell the car and buy one with fuel injection. I have to much time and money onto it now so that is not an option. I am going to have to drive it for quite a while to break even.

I wish I could help you out, but I know nothing about carbs.
Try this link: http://www.88turboaccord.net
- Here you will find the link to the third generation accord forum that all the third gen gearheads go to. Look in the "links" page to find it.
Good luck.

are you interested in making that accord a 2.2 fuel injected accord? if you want to do that, i have the whole engine, head, and ecu that you could buy from me. it needs a new tranny, so that won't help you out, but if you are interested in going fuel injected, i will sell that motor for you. i took it out of a 90 accord and it is just sitting in my garage collecting dust. i don't mind parting with it, real cheep. email me at crxplus@hotmail if you are interested.
Don't be messing around with the carb if you are inexperienced..
I notice you live in Cali... have you ever had a fuel filler neck recall done?
It may not be as important a recall to the west coast owners as it is here in the northeast..
What happens is the filler neck starts to rust and corrode and those deposits end up in the fuel tank and those very deposits clog the fuel system... You may have very well have had the filler neck replaced but your car is over 10 yrs old and it could show signs of deterioration...
The first place you want to start is to take a fuel sample and inspect the quality of fuel entering the carb...
you would do this by disconnecting the red braided hose that is located just underneath the drivers side of the air cleaner housing, insert the hose into a clean bottle and start the car.. fuel will pump into the bottle so you can visually check the fuel for any contaminents.. just don't crank the motor too much or you'll have a petrol mess on your hands...
Don't be making carb adjustments yet.. I'm sure the carb is in working order, you just need to follow the proper methods of diagnosing the problem...
I'm going with what I have seen on several occassions and steering towards a fuel related problem... another attempt would be to replace the fuel filters.. you have 2 in your car ( main and auxilliary)
