Code 17. Speed Sensor? Car has a speedo cable!
I'm getting a code 17 in my rock stock 89 civic 1.5. Alldata and other sites says thats speed sensor, yet I have a manual trans with a speedo cable. I've checked on the back of the Cluster, and followed the cable all the way down to the trans. No spped sensor found. I heard this was an Ignitor fault.
Inputs appreciated

i get that all the time when my cluth slips or cus when i let off the gas my mph drop to zero and i get a speed sensor and faulty igniter .
even tho its cable cluster it still tells the ecm how fast ur going so it knows how much fuel and air to throw ect.

I don't have any speedometer problems. Is there a remedy? Is the speed sensor a part of the cluster? I cleared the codes and it hasn't come back yet. What have you done, or do you just clear the codes when it comes back?
from the helms:
block rear wheels set parking brake, lift front set on stands.
volt meter between b16 + and a18- terminals.
rotate lf wheel. should pulse from 0v to 5v.
if not check for or open in b16 yel/red wire between ecu and speed sensor.
in this case it is in the speedo head.

So is the speed sensor replaceable? I've heard its not. If so where is it located? Before I get the multimeter out I kinda wanna know where the sensor is you know? Is it a part of the cluster like other people say it is? Can you provide a part number?
appreciate the help!
appreciate the help!
it may not be you may need a speedo head, i have never had an ef fail on me.
i dont have a pn, only one i had an issue with we swapped clusters and it worked. but it has to be part of the speedo head. thats what the cable drives.

Oh ok, so would I have to replace the whole cable, or the cable head is what the cable plugs into at the transmission?

This is the little gismo inside the cluster:

Also make sure these two screws are tight:

In my case the speedometer worked but it continued to
throw this code so I replace the entire cluster and it went away..

Damn that's some engineering! So let's say I get this speedo head, Can I roll the odometer numbers to match the mileage without breaking anything? I hear the speedo head is like $500 new.

The code really didn't have any adverse effect on how my car ran,
So what I did for the time being was to remove the check engine light..
I eventually bought a used one from these folks:
http://www.evansautomotive.net/page2.htm and documented
the mileage on both clusters at the time of replacement.
You could alter it or pay to have it done professionally
as long as it is for legitimate reasons..
{check your local laws I would say..}

Thanks dude I appreciate it! I just cleared the code and it hasn't come back yet. I wanted to set the odometer to the exact mileage I have because I wanted it exact you know? I don't plan on selling my car anytime soon so its legit. How much did you buy yours for?

One other thing you might do is to lubricate the inner cable..
See: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1325930 for details on that.
When the cable dries out,it begins to bind inside the cable housing
and can cause the speedo needle to fluxuate..
