Default starting a build. need some gewd advise.

hey guys. ive been looking through the archives for about 2.5 hours now, looking up everything i can about starting a turbo build. now i wana see what you all have to say. if you know of a good thread i should read, point me there, really, and info at all, how ever small, would be really helpful.

so...

my plan is to buy a block, for a turbo build, at the end of this summer. then buiold it over the winter, i want to sleeve it, and buy the turbo kit next summer (got my eyes of AFI...)\

so my questions.

1) what block should i get?
* i was thinking that the best block would be a GSR block, form what i read...
* i have a b16b right now, and when im done building my block, maybe i could use the head of my motor right now?
*thats ls/vtec right?
* i want to go the whole 9 yards, forged internals, balanced, sleeves, ect... can you tell me what brand you have had exp. with and what ones youve head about
* ive heard that you can use a ls crank in a gsr block of a longer stroke? is that correct? what am i thinking of lol?

so help em out where do i start, this is my first real build! i wana take NO shortcuts, even if it costs me more.

*goals* 350-500whp 92 oct. DD and what ever psi it take to get me there (but im not at that stage yet i need a motor lol.)

THANKS!!!!

you could just keep the block you have then sleeve and bore it out to 83-84mm,pretty much be the same as buying a b18 block.as for the turbo kit you cant go wrong with an AFI kit, just make sure you get a decent ems, larger injectors and a 255 walbro fuel pump and you'll be set.

Bingo!

I'm stuck choosing between the AFI, Peakboost, and Synapse turbo kit. I've read about their assembly, quality, and fitment . But can't find any customer feedbacks or testamonials on these kits.

Any b-series block will do, just depends if the block you plan to use, will be stock or built to your spec. And also depends on your goals.

* i have a b16b right now, and when im done building my block, maybe i could use the head of my motor right now?

I assume you have a JDM CTR motor then? If so, you should just keep it, and upgrade the internals. You can go with lower cr pistons, since stock b16b cr=10:8. But plenty of people boost their stock b16b motors without problems. It's all about the tune!

*thats ls/vtec right?

Yes, if your using an ls/b20 block with any vtec head. Gsr block w/any other vtec head like b16, CTR, or ITR. Are considered the "Poormans-R", but a GSR block w/b16 head and supporting mods is usually a "Poorman's-R", according to readings all over HT.

* i want to go the whole 9 yards, forged internals, balanced, sleeves, ect... can you tell me what brand you have had exp. with and what ones youve head about

There are plenty of reputable companies producing quality parts for your setup. I myself have no first hand experience on using upgraded internals. Only from readings, threads, etc. I will though for sure in the future, of course all those upgrades will surely add more support to your power goals.

Your entire build will be pricey, time consuming, and lots of work. What's your budget? You can start out by building the motor first since that's what you already have. Then once you have it assembled and ready. You can focus on getting a turbo setup for your motor. As for your HP goals, you have a variety of turbochargers to choose from. GL

thanks for the posts, they are really helpful!

i dont mind pricey, because its all i spend my money on, its all i really care about, its my hobby, but i dont think ill go as far as to say its my life lol.

time, i have all the time i need, but the main reason im not using my current set up is because i cant afford a beater car, and i dont want ta beater car. i dont want to use the b16b, ctr motor... i want to build a gsr block, and i guess from what ive read a p23 head, port polish 5 angle, ect. thats the main reason i dont want to pull my motor, i want to take all the time i need, and buikld it for big numbers, so if in the future i change my mind and want more power, i dont have to redo anything! basically, i want a motor that i can build aside from the one in my car.

and work, i dont care, i like working on cars, other wise, i wouldnt want to do this. i want to have the block out of my car and chillin on a engine stand so i can work on it and build it while still rollin in my DD ctr. that way after a year and a half, i can unveil what ive been building, and drop it in! its a huge learning process that i WANT to do.

as for the turbo kit, i dont really care about that right now. as of now, i just want to get a built motor that can handle what ever i throw at it. well, almost.

ne one have some of ther build threads i can take a peek at? thanks!!!

btw, what is the best ecu ems w/e besides the s300, thats to much money lol.

The Hondata S300 is inexpensive compared to AEM EMS, Haltech, etc. Which those, and other standalone's can run you more then $1.5k brand new. Plus many people use Hondata and are successful with it.

You'll find plenty of threads on Hondata. That's the ems I plan to use on my turbo setup.
