00 si serious problem. COmpression test not consitent plus shaking and loss of power
Hello everyone,
I am new to the site and have a 00 civic si. It has about 89,000. I purchased the car just recently and notice a problem. I took it to the mechanic and he diagnosed it with codes P0172 (System running rich) and P1457 evap system leakage. The car also shakes at idle and sometimes rpms go very low. Mechanic drove the car and was puzzled by the fact that it would barely peel out on 1st gear. He did almost everything to diagnose it, and the last thing he did was a compression test. The numbers were as follows:
From left to right
Cyclinder 1: 185 psi Cylinder 2: 185 psi Cylinder 3: 153 psi Cylinder 4: 185 psi
Since cylinder 3 is inconsistent, he says there is my PROBLEM. Now the question is what is next. He said I need a new head.
ALL HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED.
Thanks

Low compression in one piston and he recommends changing the head?
that's the worst thing I ever heard, take it to another mechanic and perform a leak down test too.
that number isn't too bad, car should still run decent, first fix the problems associated with the CELs.
Perform a tune up.

^^leakdown test. pressurize the cylinder and listen for hissing noises coming from either the exhaust, the intake, or the oil cap. exhaust= toasted exhaust valve. intake= toasted intake valve. oil cap= toasted compression rings.
if it has low compression then there will be hissing from one of the places mentioned it is impossible not to cause that low compression on that cly has to go somewhere and the leak down test shows where so try it again or try a diffrent mech.

your compression is cool.
the running rich code could be because of a bad injector.
for the evap make sure your gas cap is in good condition and check all the vacuum hoses are connected.
do a tune up and make sure you are getting spark out of the distributor
i hope this help

check your o2 sensors, i have run into this issue with an o2 sensor gone crazy stuck on lean and the ecu is just following withthe data it has been given. maybe even consider disconecting the cat if you have one.the evap code will not cause drivability but the rich code will.deal with the rich code then work on the evap code. also i have seen ecus go bad, injector drver, etc... that tech who told you to replace the head is not a tech but another scam artist or a really dumb guy. no hissing like the guys said proved that the head is ok. dont get screwed, if you must go to a tech make sure he has some certs or is highly recomended.worst case scenario hit the dealer, but be ready to bend over...post some more info maybe we can all help!!

The tech. did a valve adjustment and said that the LMA's need replacement, since they are causing noise. In terms of the shaking, he says the car has solid motor mounts, and can cause the engine shake. Still nothing on why the car is running rich. He did say that the car has an intake off a older model b16.
Also when the car is running, and when each spark plug wire is unplugged, the car shuts off. The tech says it should not shut off and finds it weird.

Yeah, I would take it to another mechanic.
Solid motor mounts? Yes it would make it vibrant @ idle.
An Older intake shouldn't make it run rich as our cars are designed to read how much oxygen and give the correct mixture. Either you have a chipped ECU/BAD ECU, primary o2 bad, stuck injector.
Good luck

I have polyurethane motor mount inserts in my Prelude and I have a vibration ONLY at idle (after reaching operating temp). The inserts essentially make the mounts "solid" hence the vibration at idle (kind of feels like a sewing machine). Your vibration is most likely caused by too low an idle or a fuel/ignition related problem. GET A SECOND OPINION ELSEWHERE

P1457 is not causing your problem. Mine consistently gets that every time I fill up the tank past the first cutoff. Has to do with fuel vapor recirculation. Make sure your gas cap is on tight and don't overfill the tank.
Figure out why your cyl#3 is off. That's causing your problem.
