Default d16z6 problem..

Basically, my cars temperature is getting cold whilst driving sensibly, so i was told it was the thermostat..
But i have noticed, its getting too hot also, when left to idle or putting my foot down, the cars temperature sits at half way and lacks power. If i leave it to idle, it doesnt get any hotter no matter how long i leave it.

Could this still be caused by the thermostat?

Or does anybody have any other ideas?

Its really annoying me now..

sounds like it could be a clogged radiator. When that happens your car will overheat while moving, but not while idleing

It doesnt actually over heat though, it goes so far then just stays there. Around half way on the guage.

When driving it gets cold, if i put my foot down it goes up to half way, and the car will go sluggish when it gets too hot.

But when it idles it sits at half way which is too hot, but doesnt get any hotter..

Weird..

Want to try and work out what it is..

If it was closed could it cause it to go too hot when idling and giving it some..

Then going right the way down to cold when driving sensibly?

Thanks for help

You may have air bubbles in the system. Thats free to check at least. Just open the valve where the hose comes from the radiator to the head, and let any air bleed out, then close it once all the air is out. You can jack the front of the car up, or do it on a slight inclined hill or driveway so all the air will work its way toward that point.

Then if thats not it, you can take the thermostat out, and boil it in a large pot that you can clean or throw out afterwards (Stainless steel is great). Watch for it to open as the water temp rises and check it with a meat thermometer. I forget what its supposed to open at, I think its 120-140, someone will know. If it never opens, then you know to replace it, same if it opens late, or seems to get stuck.

If its ok, then you need to open the radiator when the car is cool, start the car and watch the fluid once the thermostat opens. rev the engine and watch for bubbles, if its fizzy, then you have a bad head gasket, or warped head. You will need to take it (the head) to a machine shop to tell you how bad it is. (you can also look for this before you remove the thermostat)

Good luck, I had a bad head gasket once on my Del Sol and a few times on other cars.

I checked it with the cap off the radiator..

There was the odd bubble and it had a slight fizzy looking top to it.. but wasnt ridiculously fizzy or bubbly..

The car uses no water at all, no sign of oil and water mixed either..

And it did the same temperature thing on my 1.5lsi, then i swapped it for the d16z6 and it still does it..

OEM is 170°F, medium temp is 180°, high temp is 190°.

I've been having similar cooling troubles with my turbo'd D16Z6, except it's just not cooling as well as I feel it should be (but then again, I've never driven the car during the summer.) I've replaced everything- radiator (which I'll do again today b/c I bought an aluminum dual core), thermostat, fan switch temp sensor, engine coolant temp sensor. Only thing I haven't changed is the water pump. I've been a bit concerned about the head gasket as well, though there isn't any white smoke coming from the exhaust, nor the typical coolant/oil mixing. Today I plan on bleeding the system (again) because it's working better than it did a couple weeks ago when it overheated badly, but it's still running warmer than expected. I'm suspecting the water pump seal is going bad, thus causing a loss of the necessary cooling system pressure...the reservoir doesn't empty like it should, either (no suction pressure?) I'm hoping it's a simple seal leak and not a bad HG or warped head!

Is your fan coming on? Have you flushed the system recently? How did the thermostat test go?

With the rad cap off, if i rev'd the engine, it would push the water out, then as i let off it would suck the water right back in, is this normal?

I dont have any smoke coming out the exhaust, i have what looks like condensation coming out of my exhaust, but i have been told this is normal.

My fan does come on i think yes, im going to double check this.

Im in the process of doing the system flush and thermo test now, will get back to you the minute i have a result

What will the white smoke smell like?

When will it be noticed? On idle? Whilst driving?

I have some sort of smoke, but it just smells like fuel

Thermostat works.

Removed thermostat, still goes to same temperature, which is halfway.

Got grey/white smoke that smells like fuel?

Looking more and more like headgasket.

I just cant get my head round why it doesnt use water and why its not going over Halfway on the temp guage..

Can anyone explain to me why that would happen if it was the headgasket at fault?
