JDM vs USDM ECU - wiring problems

JDM vs USDM ECU - wiring problems
I have some sort of wiring issue: here is what is happening
running LS/Vtec w/ obd2-obd1 jumper
with virgin JDM P72 OBD1 ecu hooked up it runs fine just pulls knock sensor light every once in awhile
with 2 different USDM P28 obd1 ( 1 chipped on was not) they both immediately started smoking - literally started smoking,
anyone have any ideas?????
