sub installation: rocker switch
i landed a 12" jbl off a buddy of mine and rather than tapping into the remote wire i wired a rocker switch into the power wire... should i have any worries about doing so? i checked the voltage and what not seems to be fine but i'm no electrician. i'll post pictures tomorrow
A few thoughts:
1. Hopefully you still wired in a fuse under the hood.
2. Some amps (I think most of them anymore) have a soft on/off feature so you don't get any popping to the speakers. The amps are used to seeing constant power with the on/off signal supplied by the remote wire. You are providing the on/off signal, but are not allowing the amp the constant power source. Not really sure, but you may experience a loud thud when turning off the switch.
3. Read the owner's manual for you amp and see if there is an amperage limit for the remote turn on lead. Remote turn on wires are probably running 5 amps, tops. Depending on how big your system is and how large your power wire is, you are probably running it with a minimum or a 20 or 30 amp fuse.
4. Are you running a cap for the amp? If so, both ends of the wire on the switch under your dash will be hot, and you will be asking for trouble.
If it were my car and my equipment, I wouldn't cut corners to do this. You run the risk of damaging your equipment and possibly having an electrical short under your dash. Also, you will make the system kind of a PITA to operate.
Just my $.02

Thanks for the input... Basically, I wired it exactly as it would have been wired, and yes I did wire a fuse in, and I made sure to check the voltage and read the manual. As far as the "thud" goes, I was concerned too, but apparently I'm getting away with it. I'm not running a cap so hot wires isn't an issue, and I made sure not to ghetto rig it just because I didn't want to ruin my equipment.
My main motivation for the switch is that it's an easy on/off and I think it adds originality. I will have to talk to an electrician though because you expressed the exact same concerns I did.
Gotta say though... it bumps.
