Default Timing Belt Question

I did my timing belt this weekend. After we started the car I have a pretty noticable whine coming from that area. When we were putting the balance belt on the tightening sequence didn't seem to tighten the belt. we could still spin the tensioner without the belt moving. so we ended up applying hand pressure and then tightening the adjusting bolt.

now i'm wondering if we overtightened it.

the helms manual does have a secton about adjustment without a total breakdown, but it doesn't tell you to take off the lower cover, which means i can't put the 6mm bolt to hold the timing belt tensioner.

By the way this is a 99 accord EX 4 cylinder.

one last question. did honda make a 99 4 cylinder DOHC?

hope you didnt leave the 6mm tension retaining bolt in there.

You can loosen the tension nut that is sticking thru the timing cover, then turn the crank 1/4 turn and retighten the tensioner nut.

The counterbalance belt doesn't need to be tight, it is driven by the cogs and belt teeth

Thanks for the reply. No, we removed the 6mm and reused it in the lower cover.

That is great news. I really think we did overtighten the balance belt. It looked crazy loose but I guess it was correct.

Thanks again

ps

any word on that DOHC accord?

did you overtighten or undertighten the alternator belt after you were finished?

Hey civic, no the alt belt is o.k. The noise is definately coming from the inside the timing/balance belt region.

No worries Touring, I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I will try to make the adjustment soon and let you guys know if all is well.
