Default Civic turbo fully built motor - Water in Oil

Setup

Block:
Laskey built and assembled B18C1 bored to 83mm
Sleeved
CP 9:1 Pistons
Pauter Rods
Moroso Oil pan
ARP Headstuds

Head:
Integra Type R head
Supertech valve springs and retainers
Type R Intake manifold and TB
Type R Cams
Skunk 2 Adjustable Gears

GT2871R Turbo - Turbine AR .82
Revhard manifold - i know i should have upgraded so don't ask!
3" downpipe
2 1/2" straight through exhaust
3" intercooler piping
Large Ebay intercooler

Ok so my previous setup which was a b16 block and type R head spun a rod bearing on the dyno so i ordered this block from laskey. No head gasket trouble then.

1st HG - 83mm Cometic HG:
New block came. Garage assembled engine, dynoed 400hp, full boost by about 3750rpm, very happy. The engine always used coolant and after checking under the oil cap it was like custard. But apart from using water the engine never smoked, very healthy motor.

2nd HG - 83mm Cometic HG
Tore down the engine and replaced the HG with another Cometic HG. Let the car idle for 20 mins and already there was custard under the oil cap.

3rd HG - 83mm overbored OEM Gasket from GE
Skimmed and pressure tested the head - came back no problems. Assembled the engine once more and within 20 mins of idling there was custard under the oil cap again.

So where do i go from here? The car has never over heated, and the engines always seem healthy but just use coolant.

I did a compression test and they came back all normal. Cant remember what the actual results were.

Any suggestions? Turbo - as its water and oil cooled? Block - deck or somewhere else?

are you mixing the oil and water on the turbo? i.e. do you have all the connections in the right places? Oil on top and bottom, water on sides?

what head studs are you using? does your car overheat when you boost through a couple gears?

I'm using ARP Head studs torqued to 85 lbs with engine oil.

The car doesn't over heat. The only time the temp gauge will rise is when there's a lot of air in the coolant system from when it uses water.

Oil and water on the turbo defin not mixed.

Any more suggestions?

One thing i haven't checked is if the deck is straight on the block but i would expect it to be straight as laskey racing built the block!

Head has been skimmed and pressure tested. So the head should be fine.

Sounds like the problem I had when I bought a sleeved block off of somone on here. The sleeves were installed incorrectly ie they cut to much of the block away. My car would only loose coolant when the motor was hot. The way to test it. Take all but a few bolts out of your oil pan. Bring the car up to temp like 180 or so for a decent amount of time so it will take a while to cool down. Drain the oil and drop the pan and look up in there where the sleeves are. If it is leaking you will see the water driping down. Mine was so bad it was like a water fountain under there.

Hope that helps.

Thats really helpful. I will have to do what you suggested. What sleeves did you have and who installed them??

The sleeves were supposed to be darton MID sleeves and looked excatly like them. When I sent it back to ERl for them to look at the block we found out the sleeves were not dartons but were a knock off.

I do not know who sleeved the block orginally the person I bought it from lied to me about every aspect of the block.

It was an expensive learning experience.

Ok update:

Did another compression test this morning-

198 199 198 199

So this is all fine.

On Thursday i went out and gave the motor some abuse. Lots of boosting. Drove the car for about an hour. Checked the oil cap and there was no custard! Great i thought.

Then last night after driving the car for about 20 mins not really boosting there was custard under the oil cap again.

Then today i drove it for about 40 mins normal driving and a few pulls. Checked the oil cap and no custard!

So what gives??? Could there still be an oil water mix in the engine from the last time I had problems with the head gasket? And its slowly coming out and evaporating off? HELP!

Ive had that happen before mate on another car when the HG went. There wasnt and actual problem since, but i managed to keep seeing coolant in the oil. turned out it was just a bit of water from when the last gasket went. Try dropping your oil again, and see if it goes away. If you aint losing any coolant or not smoking going on now. i'd give it a day or so and just keep an eye on the oil and your temp gauge. Where bouts in manc you from anyway? im in the middle of doing a turbo build myself..

Yeah i'll just see how it goes and keep checking the water level. Just concerning cos i've spent so much money and time on this!

I'm from Sale near Altrincham. How fars your build got? What power you looking for? Where you from?

Im from warrington, not that far away like.

Im just in the process of gathering all the parts together and waiting for them to arrive. Ive ordered a lot of stuff from spoolin performance off here, got the mani, dp, 57trim turbo etc, and just gone with some 440's, walbro pump and hondata s300. As soon as all the stuff arrives i'll be booking a bit of time off work and sorting it all out. To start i will be running on standard internals and im thinking about getting another block and building that separate.

Who did you get to tune your car? what management have you gone for?

I've got a spoolin performance downpipe. Its nice.

I went for the s300 as well. Easy to use and got loads of features.

When i was on standard internals on my b16 it made 230bhp on a pretty small t3 super 60 turbo. Then when i upgraded to a gt28rs and boosted untuned it blew a ringland! That was racing an M3 lol My mistake!

But anyhow i think i've done it properly this time.

Matt @ The Racing Line in Halifax tuned it for me. I think he did a good job! RC should be near you. They are 'supposed' to be good but they didnt seem interested in tuning my civic and canceled my tuning day the day before after i'd waited 3 months!

Matt on the otherhand was very enthusiastic and loves civic turbos.

is it coolant getting into the oil or just water/vapour building up under the valve cover from diffrent temps?

what kind of valve cover breather/pcv system do you have?

Hmm not sure. It was under the valve cover but not sure about the oil. The oil looked ok really.
The PCV system is stock part from the line going from the valve cover to the intake has been removed.

I drove it hard last night and no signs of using coolant or anything under the oil cap. So its looking good.

Looks like the Honda HG fixed it and there was still oil/water mix left in the engine. Thanks for everyones help.

cool, well there is a place about 5miles from mine called TDI northwest. They do a lot of honda stuff and tuning and are also a hondata dealer. So i think that might be an alrite place to take it. hopefully it sounds like your cars sorted now anyway. once i get mine all sorted i'll have to give you a shout.
