High egt's ususally mean running lean, low egt's=running rich.

Is that 1000*F or *C? I'll assume (and I hope for your sake) it's *F. These are the average temps I've gathered from previous posts...

idle...650*F-850*F
cruise around town...850*F-1150*F
highway...1250*F-1500*F
boost @WOT...no more than 1450*F-1500*F

Generally your peak EGT reading will occur at a stoich ratio (@14.7). As you go richer OR leaner, the EGT wil drop (ie. get cooler). However, an overly rich mixture will cause high EGT readings as well as some of the unburned mixture will ignite in the hot exhaust manifold. Also, retarded ignition timing is another cause for high EGT readings.

Just the opposite. If your running rich then you will have higher egt's. The unburnt gas actually ignites in the exhaust manifold, causing higher egt readings.
