I'm starting some rust repair on my civic this comming weekend and I really want to use POR15 on it as I've heard so much good so much great stuff about it. My biggest fear with this stuff is that it drys rock hard, so i'm really wondering how I go about getting it smooth enough to prime/paint over, is it at all sandable? Should I use a highbuild or spot putty over it to get it smooth, and how is adhesion to POR15 by paint and primer?

Second, I plan in covering some small rust holes with fiberglass in the rear wheel well and i've heard that POR15 can be used instead of resin? Has anyone ever done this?

 

POR15 is awesome man. I've used it on my entire engine bay, fender wells, and other random stuff.

POR15 does dry pretty solid, but it's self leveling, so it'll be nice and smooth. If youre gonna paint it, I wouldnt even bother trying to sand it for good adhesion, I've tried before. One thing my uncle told me about POR15 if you want to paint it, paint over the POR15 while it's still wet or tacky. It'll hold the color, and be rock solid.

Definitely use it on the inside of the fenders, why do you think they call it "Paint Over Rust"?

I've seen POR15 a few times on frames and whatnot, and while it is supposed to be self leveling, it always looks a bit wavey to me, be it from brush strokes, or just the thickness of the paint. As i'm doing spots I'm afraid the POR15 will leave me wavey high spots that are really hard to sand smooth. Just wondering how I would deal with that?

 

i used it on a truck frame. i brused it on. i didnt sand it just scraped some loose **** away. if u get it on u it aint comin off for a week. but it dont dry that smooth. its better for frames. it will leave wavey due to the brushing it on. hope that helps and makes sence

I don't know what kind of brushes you guys are using but a friend of mine did his interior with a foam brush and it came out really nice(smooth)

 

yeah, I forget what brush I used, but everything came out smooth on mine. There were brush strokes when I was applying, but it leveled off before it dried.

If you aren't going to paint it, I would use the semi-gloss or flat black POR15 because the light wont be reflected as much, then I'm sure you wont see the wavy look youre talking about.

So there's no way of getting Bondo over POR15? I have a rust spot forming up and want to sand that rust down, put POR15 on that area, hopefully Bondo it, and paint over the Bondo.

Can this work the way I want it? Or is it a better idea just to get a spray can black Rustoleum?

 

OK, did a little research, looks like body filler and primer is best applied over POR15 while still tackey because it is such a bastard to sand to get proper adhesion. POR also sells tie coat and etching primer and thier own body filler which aperantly work over dry POR15, but body guys i've talked to said it's overpriced and not as good as other fillers and primers that are readily available and cheap.

I'm going to star killing rust this weekend, i'll take pics and keep y'all posted.

no you cant weld on it. only metal to metal. that **** is to hard you may beable to but it wont last. unless you weld it really hot and burn threw it but i would advise agianst it
