Default Whats going on with my turbo?!

So I have a 4094 turbo and was doing some preseason freshening up and saw this on the inside of my turbine housing. It almost looks like rust and the metal looks somewhat pitted. Turbo does not even spin with this stuff in there. With all the turbos Ive seen and installed, I've never seen this before nor can I figure out what caused this. I havent started the car and am in the process of taking the turbo off to see how extensive the damage is.

Any help here? Thanks...

Edit, I removed the turbo and the shaft spins freely. So all the buildup in the turbine housing is stopping the blades from spinning. Any idea what may have caused this and what I can do to remove it without affecting the tolerances? The buildup is pretty hardened.

Looks like some weird fungus, lol.

Is it a cast iron turbo?

mmm thats weird looks as if water was coming thru the exhaust or somethin then corroding up on there. Im not familiar with the routing of water on a water cooled turbo.... is there any way it could blow thru a seal or something and come out the exhaust?

yea, that very well could be the case. I havent looked at the seals.

I've sent the pics to a Garret dist. also. We'll see what they have to say.
