when you say not engaged, do you mean the pedal is pressed? this could be the throw out or the pilot bushing. what kind of noise, a squeal is the pilot.

no its not the release bearing. I had the same problem. I replaced the bearing, put everything back together and still had that annoying sound. Its something I believe in the gear box, I just ended up buying a new tranny. Problem fixed!!!

 

Its the bearing on the other side. I cant remember what its called off the top of my head.
I did what the guy above did, get a used tranny coz mine whined pretty loud with the clutch pedal not pressed.

I still have the whining trans that grinds third gear as a spare once i can get it rebuilt
