Default Loud clicking/banging from tranny...

I've noticed it getting worse and worse over the pat few weeks, but last night my tranny was making a horrific clicking/tapping/banging noise in gear and in nuetral. If you pop the hood you can hear the noise, but its much louder inside that car. Anyone know what teh cause of this is? its a 96 EX, stock motor and tranny, with stock clutch. I'm thinking its the main inpuit shaft (i think thats what it is called), but I'm not sure. Anyone have any expeirence with this? Can it be fixed w/o getting a new tranny?

Are you sure its the transmission?

It could be possible that you spun the rod bearing on either cylinder 3 or 4 which could make you think that it is the transmission that is making the noise.

I had the same problem and I could've as well said that it may have been the tranny though it defiantly was the rod bearing.

Yeh, I thought that I may had spun a bearing, but you can hear the noise coming from the tranny, whenever you pop the hood. Also, when I push the clutch pedal in, the noise goes away. But, when in gear or just in neutral, you can hear it.

Wait, when you push the clutch pedal to the floor the noise goes away?

Yup, and this metal on metal violence is annoying to say the least.

most likely your input shaft bearing. fix that now, or it will explode and the pieces of it will have fun destroying all the internals.

it could be the throwout bearing is sitting crooked on the fork. move the rubber boot off the slave cylinder and wiggle the release fork a little bit. this happened to me once.

but it's probably your isb.

Its a bearing on the mainshaft, most likely the input shaft bearing.

Take off the trans, open the case, spin all the bearings, whichever ones click, replace them.

(If you aren't mechanically inclined, you'll need a new trans sooner or later...because eventually that bearing WILL fail and your trans will go bye bye)

The springs may have fallen out of your clutch disc also. My friends had about the same sound and did the same thing yours did. Only way to find out for sure is to pull the tranny.

hey guys, i have a 2000 civic ex and it seems to be making the same noise. i recently got a swap of the same engine(D16Y8) because one of the oil lines gave out and there was not enough oil flowing through. so when this happenend i went to get tha engine and like a few months later i noticed the same clicking noise when i put it in nuetral and when i'm driving. it starts in 1st gear, second is ok and then in third it makes the noise again. i really want to get rid of that stupid noise and i have no idea what to do. please help me with any information at all.
thanx,
ArT
