Is there anyway to remove the engine without taking out the transmission?

Im going to get my block resurfaced and don't have an engine lift or anything.

Any advice?

The input shaft, clutch, and pressure plate will make it REALLY difficult. Can it be done? Yes. But it would be harder and more dangerous (to the engine) than pulling it all at once, or pulling the trans first then the motor.

Just do the ghetto swap, and drop the whole thing to the ground slowly with a jack after detaching everything (mounts, wires, axels, etc.. ), and raise the car way the hell up, then pull the sucker out from beneath. Do the reverse to swap it back in after the maintenance.

it is WAY easier to pull the motor and trans as one.

HOWEVER

you can pull the trans first, then pull the motor after for more space. but its slower. and not easier

the drop is the ticket. i pulled a motor out of a crx i had in 1/2 hr on my lunch break

put a big piece of cardboard box under the motor, so when do drop the car on the floor its easier to drag out from under neath, thats what i did when i dropped my B16 out of my DB1 after crashing it.

OK, probably an obvious question..

How do you lift the car high enough to clear the whole freaking engine?

it doesn't take much...me and a friend did this in my driveway. you just jack up the car, use jack stands, re-position and jack higher, using stands, wood or whatever will hold the shell up.

You need a really tall jack unfortunately. or you can play "darwin awards" and use some bricks and a cinderblock or something. I bought a jack that can do the engine out the bottom swap from sams for around $80. i still needed some jack stands and a couple of small peices of 2x4, but it worked.

Dont you have to remove one or both of the lower subframes too? Do you lean the engine way backwards once its out?

you just need to remove the passenger side front radius rod for the transmission to clear. otherwise it fits just fine without removing the front or rear cross member.

Dropping the engine from the bottom isnt the ghetto way not only is it the most practical way its the right way all FWD come out from the bottom

Just stick with pulling out the trans and engine together from the bottom of the car. Easiest most effective way and if you tried to pull them apart in the car you have a good chance of messing up the clutch springs than you do with the engine out. Just letting you know if you didnt want to buy a new clutch pack.

I almost always pull the engine out the bottom, I even have a engine hoist.

To drop the engine out the bottom, first you need to lower the back of the car. I've done it a couple ways. Either let all the air out of the back tires, install some donuts (compact spares), remove the rear wheels and leave the back on a jack or sometimes if the car has lowered suspension it is already low enough.

when you drop the engine, lower it onto cardboard. Makes it slide easier.

One of my friends didn't listen to me and tried pulling his engine and leaving the trans in....let's just say next time he will listen to me.

I used some big jackstands and lowered the motor onto a low profile jack and just rolled it out

what about removing just the engine from an automatic integra...

i have my black 92 integra that had a newer engine put in but the front end is wrecked and auto tranny is going out....

i want to take a non running engine out and swap in to my unwrecked 92 integra also an automatic and tranny has no flaws, both 92 integras are obd1 ecu and same b18a1 engine

would i still have to remove the tranny with the engine?

i dont want to have to do extra work....
by taking the whole front end apart...

i do have an engine lift/crane

please email me at
adamnfs@live.com for suggestions please, any help i will appriciate!!!!
