car shut off while driving *** urgent ***
ive got a 93 DD hatch with a stock d15 in it
yesterday i was driving thru some canyon and it was running fine
i was pushing it kinda hard but no more than i usually do
as i was driving back home i noticed a noise from the exhuast sounded kinda like
it was choking up
from there i drove maybe a mile to where it shut off as i was down shift to a stop
i pulled over and tried to start it up but wouldnt it cranks but just doesnt want to start
i popped the hood and noticed one of the spark plug wires wasnt pushed in all the way
i pulled it out and found some oil in there the rest were all clean
now i dont know if this has anything to do with it shutting off or note
please feed my brain any help is much appreciated

It sounds like the spark plug seal in the valve cover is leaking and needs to be replaced.
In addition, the disconnected plug wire may have caused a short in the ignition system. I would suspect a coil or igniter unit problem.
First, check whether you have spark at the plugs by removing a plug wire and inserting a good plug into the end. Have a buddy crank the engine while you have the threads of the plug grounded against a convenient metal engine part. You should see a bright spark at the plug tip. Repeat for each plug wire. If there is not spark at any plugs, then troubleshoot the distributor, particularly the coil and igniter. Also check whether any fuses are blown in the under-hood and under-dash fuse boxes.

Similar thing happened to my sister's car. It just shut off while she was driving on the freeway.
There was still fuel and spark and it did turn over.
The problem was a fried ignition coil.
Something to keep in mind is that there are two kinds of distributors. One is called Hitatchi and the other is a TEC style distributor.
There will be a marking on the ignition coil.

Dude. It really helps us all when people post the solution to their problem. It makes the whole thread a lot more useful, essentially to those of us who love to search. Tell us! How was it fixed?
Hi, found this website, while searching for toubleshooting problems for my 99 Civic. My car has started shutting off while I'm driving. Put in neutral and it cranks right up. Crazy!!! Changed fuel filter, bought new gas cap. Check engine light is not on. Any ideas on what the problem can be would be appreciated.

first off, don't thread jack, use the new topic button in the top right corner. 2nd, welcome to honda-tech. and 3rd, as for your car, it could be a number of things. obviously if it starts up you have fuel, spark, and air. so what is causing it not to get all those while driving? check some of these, it may not be the answer, but you just may find the correct problem in searching. first, check your distributor, cap and rotor button. second, check all seals, i had a weird problem once where i had a blown head gasket and sometimes too much water would leak into the cylinder and therefore there was not enough power and the car would shut off since that cylinder could not ignite with water in it. check your plugs and wires too.
