im trying to put coilover sleeves on my car but im having a hard time with the self locking bolt under the hood. my alan wrench partially stripped out the inside of the bolt. do i need to put the spring compressor on first before i loosen bolt and i had it jacked up would that matter?

 

use an impact gun..without the alan wrench u might get lucky... if not go with the vise grip, with the vise grip you will damage the shaft on the shock, but make sure u grip it all the way at the very top of the shaft, that way there's less chance of it leaking, kinda hard to explain..but that's what i would do, maybe somebody else has a different oppion...hope it helps...

 

yeah i dont want to damage the shaft and i can still get my alan key in good in a different position but i want to get it loose with some trick before prying again. do i hook the spring compressor up first and then do it?

If the shocks/springs are still on the car, there is no need to loosen that bolt yet. If they are out of the car, i would try compressing the spring first to relieve pressure, then try and loosen it. Hit it with PB Blaster or WD-40 or watever u have handy.

i got the ones on the mount loose and then when to town with the bolt on the lower control arm.used WD-40 and pb blaster and ended up cracking a socket,snapping a ratchet in half and twisted the head right off the bolt. ended up having to beat the bolt out of the lower control arm and found a match at a local speacialty fasteners store.

i live and die by WD-40, i have some by my bed, i use it in the shower, and at the dinner table. WD-40 kicks hella ***, yo. if the area ur working on isn't around paint or fuel lines you could torch around the bolt, lightly. not red hot, but lightly, to expand the metal around it, then some more WD-40, lol. and try to remove it after a few times, works for me on brakes and such.

 

yeah i didnt have a torch so oh well. my car is f*c#en slammed to the ground. I have to raise it up its rubbing alot. oh and steamed rice you say you live by wd-40....back in high school one time for $50 i drank a bottle of rum with five shots of wd-40 in it. i got my $50 but probably used it in advil for the next week. lol move it away from the dinner table

 

Well we had the same problen on a freinds sol doin the same thing. He cut the nuts off with a grinder very carefully and used replacement nuts off junk parts lying around. That was the only thing we found to work just dont grind to far into the threads tho!!!
