Since when do rotors squeak? You probably need some anti-squeal compound ($1.50) on the backings of your brake pads.

If you do end up installing new rotors, it is easy and takes about 15 min per side, for a beginner (after the wheel is off). BUT, you need to invest $25 and get an impact driver to get those rotten screws off of the rotor.

Didnt think they did... The rotor is the only part that I havent replaced in 37K miles. So I thought Id ask.

I think I need new rotors too.

What pads? My brakes always squeak -- it's what keeps my wife from driving my cars.
Endless CCX. They didnt squeak until a couple weeks ago. They did an 11 and half hour drive to VIR, 2 days at VIR, 11 and half back from VIR, and then daily driving since the end of Feb. Never a squeak until about a week or 2 a go.

I've never had luck with air tools and rotor screws.. always bend the bits. the impact driver is much better for this application, but there is also kenji's ballpeen hammer method and what I like to call the DeWalt method.

-Dave, who is on his 4th set of rotors in 45kish miles and is soon to be on the 5th..

CCX pads will squeak when they are cold and you apply only soft breaking pressure. High performance pads will do that. Mine squeak also and they only have 3000 miles of mildly aggressive driving on them. If there is still some pad material on, then you don't need to change them. As for the rotors, if they are not waved or cracked why change them ?

Hmm. I have 7k miles, 5k+ of which is hard track driving (big circuits, SIR, PIR, SCR) -- have gone through 5 sets of Porterfield R4 pads (plus the stockers) and am still on the same rotors with no visible cracking etc....
1st set: Cracked a rotor at 16-17K or so (maybe 20k? I forget)
2nd set: Powerslots.. wanted to remove them ASAP, but was too lazy, used once ont he track and thrown out with lots of life left
3rd set: Brembo blanks, much much track use, lasted for about 6 months/7-8k miles but with hawk blues for almost all their life..
4th set: 1 month old (purchased in south haven mi during the expo) still have a good bit of life.. but also on hawk blues for their entire life.. including street and blues EAT rotors when cold.. but need to get new whjeel studs before breaking the ones holding the front left wheel one to fix..

Dave,

not like I'm the expert, but rotors should be ok unless you did something dumb like run a track day with no pads left. My Carbotechs squeak like bastards on the street unless I stomp them really hard, and they squeak a lot even when I am not applying and pedal pressure. So I have another set of Wagner front pads (~$40) that make no sound. I am quite sure my rotors are ok and I have done quite a few more track days than you.

Cool cool. Thanks guys. I think Im still goign to look into new rotors. They have a few of those grooves in them and are looking pretty beat. Id rather just do it now than later.
