I am thinking about swapping an HX cylinder head/intake manifold/ECU/O2 sensor onto my 96 EX 5 speed in an attempt to get even more stellar fuel economy.

Does anyone have first hand experience with this? My concern is since the VTEC-E is designed primarily for good fuel economy at low engine RPM's, that I may not see too much of a benefit without also using the tall-geared HX transmission.

Any input on this, or better yet, has anyone tried it? I already have the HX parts.

Sell what you have to make the money you would have saved in getting more fuel mileage. LOL

This coming for a proud owner of a '95 Ex coupe with a D15Z1 vtec-e!

 

never tried it, but the HX also uses a different wiring harness then the EX

I dunno about how bad the HX trans is, but the VX and CX transmissions are nearly TWICE as wide, as the Z6/Y8 transmissions and have a HUGE impact on gas mileage.

 

Well obviously you're going to get less freeway mpg due to the gear ratio. The EX cruises at 75 mph somewhere around 3500 RPM. I can't make any generalization about your street mpg because there are just too many variables. It will probably be similar to a stock Y5.

It's good to hear you're going to use the correct ECU/O2 sensor. I'm so embarrassed for all the people that say "I'm going to swap on a Y5 head and use a P28 ECU and it's going to be like normal VTEC".

 

so to do this d16y5 swap into a EK EX, you need the head, intake manifold, front 5 wire o2 sensor, ecu and hx engine harness?

 

the HX uses a different exhaust manifold with the cat built in under the header. Not sure if a regular header/cat on an EX will have any affect on your HX swap. You also might need the ECU harness as well, but you could get by if you pin & run a few wires by yourself.
