I have a JDM D15B with P08 ECU. Installed a nitrous dry shot, 75 shot. Shot 1...2..gear...then car started losing power. CHecked plugs, burnt off the two middle plugs. I mean the tips were gone. (insert F&F quote here)-Slams laptop...SHUT UP!!!

Started sounding like a Subaru WRX. I have stock header with 2/1/4 piping and intake. Very simple.

I replaced the plugs...it runs a bit better but it still sounds like a WRX.

Diagnosis...burnt valve? Stuck valve on carbon deposits? The car doesnt smoke...no coolant leaks, no blown headgasket.

Discuss and Help.

Perhaps you fried a ring ? That would explain the the power loss from the drop in compression. Have you pulled your head ?

 

It's not a piston ring. It's not smoking at all. Piston number 3 is acting up.

Symptoms: 1. Removed every spark wire and all caused the engine to shake but number 3.

2. Removed the injector plugs on all of them and all caused a shake except number 3.

There is spark and gas in all of them. Only number 3 seems to maybe not holding compression or something.

other than a bent valve thats the only thing it could be if you lost compression

maybe dont abuse the nitrous next time

 

Yea, ur piston/rings are prolly bad in cylinder 3. Only way to tell is to take off the head and inspect. Btw, a NOS is nothing but trouble for a motor, hence the reason most people on this site dont bother with it. Super cold air and hot motors don't mix.

 

With the plugs the way you say, it sounds like a detonation crushed ring pack on Cyl 3.

No offense to the OP, but most nitrous failures are due to the operator, not the system. Most factory cars can handle a 50-75 shot without much trouble if they follow installation/usage directions to a T. Things like this can be chalked up on nitrous use in old(er) engines, plain old abuse(anybody can blow anything up given enough time), or an improperly set up system/unmatched components. Guys like Chuck Samuel from Fast Times Motorworks don't feed their engines 500 hp worth of N2O if hot engines and N2O don't mix.

Nothing like that. The cars idles just fine..but once in the mid rpms it sounds wrx ish.. however up in the high rpm..its smooth, just like before.

Wouldnt fried rings cause a lot of smoke and blowby?? I have zero smoke coming out of the exhaust.

Let's focus on the issue guys. The nitrous was installed correctly..I am currently shooting a 250 shot on a v8 5.0 soo, I know what I am doing.

I am not new to nitrous, but new to the N20 in Hondas.

 

eventhough you checked the spark plugs, check the wires. i know my car had the same noise. the plug wire had a tiny rip in it and it was catching ground from the valve cover. causing a short. usually, not always. hondas make that noise when a cylinder fails. if not do a compression test. nitrous has been known to be "dynamite" in the cylinder.

 

You would think if the rings were NG, then yeah, it should smoke. But I've seen cars do some weird ****........

Maybe it is as simple as fried wires. Makes sense, if you think about it. The ignition system has to work harder to light off the N2O/gas mix, so if the wires are/were the weak link, they could have said f@!k it, I'm out.

Check your oil, see if its milky, you coulda pitched your headgasket.

Burning coolant looks very much like regular exhaust gas in colder weather.

You know what you have to do. Start with a compression test. Then pull off the head.

I'd take a look at the color of the oil on my dipstick before doing a compression test or tearing off the head.....

Indeed. I just wanted some theoretical reassurance before I did all of that.

So....I knew I had low compression on cylinder number 3. Next step.

I removed the head and indeed it was a valve. An exhaust valve took a ****. It can be best described as an imperfect circle, causing the drop in compression and wrx sound. So, I am now replacing the valve since the rest of the motor is in top shape. The pistons are crisp, clean and not a drop of carbon buildup. Very happy with that part.

I should be finished tomorrow with the valve and will be installing a brand new set of Felpro gasket sets.

No, the headgasket looked in great shape but I am replacing it anyways along with brand new OEM valve seals and intake, exhaust, valve cover gaskets.
