Default y7/y8 w/ skunk2 cam gear timing problem

Well here we are again...i had to change head gasket cause timing blew it. My dizzy was all the way forward in order for it to be in time.

anyways block is AEBS sleeved Y7 and head is Y8 both are decked/milled I am not sure how much.

I have a skunk 2 gear on it. i bought the motor like this. I have tried on 3 seperate 5 hour sessions to get it in time. I believe it is one tooth off.

i have never ever messed with cam timing before. I think it is the only way to get it in time. What do you guys think? my friend and i are afraid to adjust the time via cam gear.

Sounds to me like you have a 92-95 cam gear on there. They will make your timing a little off (just about 1 tooth, 4.5 degrees IIRC...) Verify that the cam gear you have is for a Y engine; I think you will find your problem.

Well, now I'm wondering if I'm just confusing myself with the D16a6 and the D15 as they have different deck heights.

Easiest way to verify would be to get a stock Y cam gear and hold it over your cam gear, lining up the keyway (you'll obviously have to remove the cam bolt). Double check the alignment marks on the OEM gear against the S2 cam gear.

4.5* is half a tooth actually, just as reference.

you will HAVE to take the cam bolt off to verify if its for a Z6 or Y8. The Y8 cam gears key way is offset from the 0* mark, while the Z6 key way is perfectly in line with the 0* mark, that is how to tell them apart.

Check out http://www.d-series.org for more on the 'half tooth' issue.

and be aware that if you are off 1 tooth, and have the wrong cam gear and put it all the way to advance you WILL hit your valves (this happened to me, just FYI)

Yes, 1 mark is 2 degrees so you'll just have to "guess" on the points between the marks.
