My 98 gsr is completely bone stock. I just recently had an idle issue. When at normal operating temp, the car idle's fine, between 750-850 rpm. But when driving and coming to a complete stop in neutral. The idle will suddenly jump up to ~1800 and down to ~1000. It will do this for about a minute or two, of the idle jumping. Then after, the idle will go back to normal. I've already cleaned out the IACV, and this has been occuring, when driving for the first 10-15 minutes after start up.

There are no CEL's at all, and the car already had a full tune-up prior to this issue. So today, I opened the hood to inspect what the problem could be. And went straight to the TB area, I looked at the TPS thinking maybe it's the sensor or the wiring. And Bingo!, I slightly moved the TPS wiring and plug around, and the idle would act up. But If I moved the wiring or plug a certain way, the idle would't jump around. I'm thinking either the wiring or plug on the TPS could be frayed/bad, or the TPS sensor could be faulty. Then again if it's a faulty TPS sensor, there would be a CEL correct?

If it is a bad TPS sensor and I get it replaced. The new TPS sensor needs to be calibrated correct? If so, how would I calibrate it?

Anyone have such problem? Maybe redo the TPS wiring? Change the TPS plug or TPS sensor? Any ideas would help, Thanks!

 

if its disconnected it may throw a code, its possible it may not though

connectors are no prob to replace, same with tps. and no you dont need to calibrate the tps. just figure out which you need, the sensor or the connector. or just go to a junkyard and pick both off.

that sucks. yes you willl have to calibrate the TPS. its pretty easy actually

Please, explain the procedure.

 

after you put the new tps on, you will need to use an ohm meter and adjust the tps until the ohm meter reads .45v at closed throttle. its simple. i got a brand new omni tps if you are interested

exactly right, i replaced mine, and my car ran funny until i calibrated it.

 

where do you stick the positive and negitive contacts to determine the ohms on the tps sensor?

i would also like to know where you stick the ohm meter lines to check the resistance. hey i had this problem too. my car would run like **** with half a throtlel, i was using an after market tps sensor. i switched it with an oem one and the problem went away. just find a oem sensor and it should fix it. i just need help calibrating it.

One little stick on ground (metal) and and one little stick on the wires coming out of the tps sensor. Only 1 wire is going to send voltage.
