Short Shifter, good or bad?
I would like to get a short shifter for my 98 civic, but I heard they are really bad for the transmission. If anyone could give me an answer it would be great. Thanks.
if you can shift faster than your transmission synchros can keep up already, then you don't need a short shifter unless you just like the feel during daily driving. but as far as racing with one for a better E/T....bullcrap.

My car already can't handle very quick shifts, but I hate the long (length) throw. I will still take as long to shift, it will just feel a little better.
i hate the stock shifter it feels like i am sturing paint. i got a short one just because i like the feel. **** my tranny, its just a sohc

adding a gsr shifter will give you a slightly shorter throw, and it has OEM quality
I agree w/ OEM quality. And the price is right too!
I am having an ITR shifter machined down right now to work in my hatch

how much more is the itr than the gsr? how is the fit?

The fit: It needs to be machined down (ITR one) not sure on GSR, but I think it does too. It's really simple for a shop to do. You have to machine the very bottom cylindrical tube. 8mm on one side (long side) 2mm on the other.
The throw feels great when coupled with a harder bushing! (I'm sure it doesn't compare to a C's shifter which I've never felt) but the price was right for me!
Should be able to get one in the classifieds if you post. I'm sure some ITR boys have some laying around.
When people say a short shifter messes up your transmission or gear syncros - that is total bullshit. Short shifters DO NOT put any more wear on your tranny. The gears still take the same amount of time to engage. If your tranny goes out when you have a SS installed, it is driver error or something else. Not the shifter.
Good, makes no sense to be bad. Might even alow for quicker shifts (not real signifigant) without the force put on the stadard shifter. The leverage from the standard shifter combigned with the length of th lever means harder more damaging shifts. Get a short shifter more for the feel than the "ET" that. 001 second problably wont help you out that much. I got one, I like mine.

most of it is driver error but here it goes
because the lower part of the shifter (below the car) is longer, it takes less movement inside the car to engage gears. simple right? well if you shift at the same speed as normal, the syncros have to engage faster, wich can cause wear over time.
you dont need to shift any faster than your rpm's drop between shifts. get an ultra lightweight flywheel. i have one and i still shift faster than my rpm's drop.
if you do buy one, do NOT shift as fast as possible. i garuntee your syncros wont last you.
