A short shifter I guess is a shifter with a lower shift **** position, and a short throw shifter would reduce distance between shifts, but I've just heard the term tossed around for a short throw shifter.

It's not for performance. Before anyone comes in here and starts bashing shifters for destorying transmissions, it's not true. Drivers destroy transmissions, not shifters. I've had a short throw on my car for years now with 0 tranny damage that was caused by it. Just don't bang through every gear like Jeff Gordon and you'll be fine.
