Have you ever wondered what the immobilizer chip looks like? I was bored and decided to dremel a key open as I was curious to know what it looked like.
1. I dremeled the sides of the key and cut straight across to remove the plastic. You can see a white plastic piece in the middle of the metal.

2. I pushed the white piece out from the key. This is the housing for the chip.

3. Inside the housing is a pill-like, glassy chip (approximately 1.25 cm in length). And inside the glass pill is what looks like a fine copper wire wrapped around something. Basically the chip is a coil of some sort producing a small magnetic field which is received at the ignition that relays to the ECU.

The glass pill looks like a subcutaneous tracking device you usually see in a movie.
In case you were wondering why I would destroy a key for my curiosity. I work at a used car dealership and we had a spare key to an MDX we sold a few years ago. We called up the customer, but he/she already sold the car so the key became my test subject.

From what I can see, it's a coil. I can see the striations.

no, cause it makes it more expensive to get a k20 swap running.
