Default Possible bad transmission?

My friend has a 2001 civic 5 speed that has a problem that i cannot figure out. It makes a grinding noise when accelerating, he change out the axles and still the same thing.

Since it only happen when he accelerates i decided to put it on jack stands and step on the gas trying to duplicate it and see if we can pin point were it is coming from, no luck at all so i guess that he may just have a bad transmission or could it be the clutch assembly.

What do you guys and gals think that this might be?
Has anyone have this problem with their civic?

Thanks everyone.

On my 2004 Civic Type R EP3 the noise was comming out from the clutch springs which were worn out and under acceleration - especialy in low revs there was a grinding noise comming out of the engine bay ... my first thought was it is gearbox or LSD, but it was just those springs. How many miles/km your firend's car has on the clock? My was doing it from like 60 000km/37500miles.

I forgot to mention that it doesn't make the noise when on the jack stand. I guess only when there is a load the it that it makes the noise.

I have a 2002 civic and I experience a grinding noise only when I start up my car. I have about 102,000 miles on it. The grinding noise will disappear after my engine is all warmed up. I start my car again the next day and I still experience a grinding noise...I don't know what could cause it.

It sounds fine when the clutch is press and its at idle. It only makes the noise when the car is moving. It kind of sounds like when you have the car up and your spinning the front tire and it makes that noise from the trans like the gears are moving but louder.

Could possibly be a bad Input Shaft Bearing. If while rolling you put the clutch pedal in and the sound goes away...it is probably in your trans. If it doesn't go away...it can be in your clutch assembly, wheel bearing assembly, or a bad differential bearing. Just a few possiblities.

same thing happend to me, i thought it was engine related but it wasnt. u probably have broken lower control arm bushings and something is rubbing when u drive.

I have the same problem but it is actually my throw out bearing. the spring in the clutch that pushes the bearing off of the clutch assembely is worn out. so the bearing is raddling against the pressure plat. it wont hurt anything it is just annoying as hell. try replacing the spring and see wat happens. that worked for me.

yup common issue, search and you'll find a few threads about this. replace the throwout bearing and input shaft bearings and compliance bushings for ur Lower Control Arm and you're set for the next 20-40K miles if you drive hard.
