Points to lift motor out with?
Hey all, Im pulling motor out and need advice as to what points to use to lift.
I was thinking about backing out a tranny bolt and putting a chain there, then using the alternator mount bolt as two points. Good, bad?
I need to go buy chain as well. How many points should I use? How long of sections of chain do I need to get? Thanks!

i have never backed out a tranny bolt. umm i usually wrap one around the drivers mount bracket and on the tranny bracket mount that way its even weight. i usually drop the motor down under the car it seems easier sometimes.
Never personally pulled/dropped a motor, but having witnessed both, the dropped motor technique looks more simple. Can't help u out more than this.

i have always dopped mine out also, i usually take off the front wheels, put a dolly under the motor, let the jack down till motor is sitting on the dolly, disconnect the mounts and jack it up. I find this was easier and doesnt scratch up the engine bay
Dropping is way easier than pulling from the top. It is also safer and more accurate when it come time to do installation of the motor mounts
Done both on the same car so I know.

yea I don't think I have a jack that will get my front end high enough to do this method........
So if I were to lift it out, does anyone have any input as to which points to use?
I assume you all still lowered it with a engine hoist? How many chain sections ( how long were they?) did you use? I could try lowering it, but I just dont think I can get the car high enough...

what's funny is that i have swapped about hundreds of Honda motors in the last 10 years and never once have i dropped it from the bottom..I guess it's a matter of preference...
Frontmost topmost tranny bolt (pulled out, through chain, back in), and the empty hole on the back of the head, driver's side. Axle bolt is a perfect fit for that one

i usually use two jacks and jack from the drivers and passenger front jack points points usually get its high enough

thanks for your help guys, I just hoisted it out the top. Took 10 mins to get out and drop on a tire. Just seemed faster to me haha.
I appreciate all the input and can't wait to get it back from being built!

I personally use mounting points on the head consisting of the two open spots for bolts and the header studs, Ive neevr had a problem with doing that and its alot easier then the bottom technique
I've always pulled the head off then dropped the rest out the bottom so the car doesnt have to be lifted so high... Maybe im doing too much?
If its just for a simple motor swap then out the top or bottom is fine.

wayy too much work
Just jack up the car from the subframe w/ a 2x4 and you'll get it high enough to clear the motor.. if not.. just the front tow hook has to come off.

There might be a bracket on the trans, we either use that with a clamp or use a trans bolt. Then on the other side, there is an open bolt hole near the alternator but on the top. Its a 14mm, we have a bracket we use with that as well.
I've always ran the chain from one bolt on the upper tranny mount, and over the engine (with a few rags to protect the distributor cap) to the front drivers/AC mount bracket. Just pull a bolt from each location, and then put the bolt back in through the chain.
that of course is when the engine comes out the top. I agree with what everyone else is saying, drop it from the bottom. You have no idea how much easier this is, until you do it.
Sounds like you have a cherry picker already, use that to raise the car. (attach to the core support)

to drop it out, you need a jack that can reach 20" height at least , 2 jackstands, a spare tire, and a furniture dolly
put dolly under the oil pan/transmission, remove wheels, lower the car so the motor is resting on the dolly, remove all the mounts, jack up the car to highest level, put jackstands at highest level, lower the car onto jackstands, lower the jack, put spare tire onto the jack, raise up the car from the frame with the spare tire, remove jackstands, jack up as high as you can get it, pull the dolly out with the motor, be sure not to break sensors at any point
it's way easier with shift linkage removed from transmission, and you can keep the header and intake manifold on the motor, just remove the radiator from the car before hand
