Default spun main bearings

ok, so recently I was roughly 170mi. away from home when it happened, so we towed it home and i took out the bearings, wanted to know weather people thought i oughta just get a new motor, or try and get new bearings and stuff and fix this one.. it is a d16a6 in a 91 ed8 civic hatch. motor has roughly 183k miles on it, and the cylinder walls are worn enough to make the engine very loud. so no matter what I do, i gotta take it out to get it rebuilt. so my question is: should i get a b16 or get the d16 rebuilt?

Well, can you handle a rebuild yourself? If you can I'd say go with a set of P29's, and other than that do a standard bottom end rebuild. You'll also want to upgrade the cam/ valvetrain. With the right head/cam/compression combo an all motor d16 will be faster than a B16 swap. But a b16 swap would be a great option too.

I noticed your in SC. PM me if you need any d-series trans work, rebuilt, custom close ratio etc. I also have a good many d-series engine parts hanging around.

i could prolly get the motor out and take the head off and stuff, but i'm pretty sure the cylinder walls have been bored out from years of being hammered on, so id have to send it off to get machined, right? then get larger pistons and rings, get the crank and crank case remaned... bigger bearings and such.. i think... all that sounds quite expensive.. i believe my trans is pretty strong, just have a wicked bad clutch plate thats worn to [expletive]

edit: future plans - in a couple years after i get out of college i think i might want to dabble in the world of turbos..

It sounds like you are making alot of assumptions. It is very rare for a motor to be that worrn as far as the cylinder walls go.

well, my dad's been a mechanic for 40+ years, im basing that off of what he says.

hatchninja, is there a difference between 1st gen and 2nd gen b16a? i know 2nd gen has 170hp, is it still made for a ef, or is it made for the 92-94 model?

the later b16 has better cams, but if you're wanting to buy a complete swap you'll need to buy an OBD1 (1st gen)

It's OBD-I, so it would be found in 92-later Hondas.

Where are you getting it from? Usually it'll come with the stock harness for thhe motor, then you need to modify yours to accept the motor. Unbless they specifically say it's an OBD-I upconvert harness.

i prefer the d16 over the d15, when you start modifying it, esp with a quality cam, like bisimoto, it really doesn't matter if you have VTEC or not.

Also it has been my experience that the d15b's are overrated in HP. I've seen a lot of strong d16a6's/sohc ZC motors....they seem to be a little stronger than d15b's
