Disturbing sound
Now, on cold mornings (<35F) when I start my car for the first time of the day (after sitting over night) SOMETIMES I get a sound a fraction of a second after the engine starts that sounds almost like a faint sound of a starter grinding. It is very brief and doesn't happen every cold start just once and a while. Now, I have owned this car since April of 2006, and it went through last winter with no issues or noises and I didn't notice any noise this season until my last oil change when the only thing I did differently was use a Mobil 1 filter instead of my usual HAMP filter. I changed filters because after 3K miles, the oil was dark, so I figured I would use a different filter. After a few times of hearing the sound, I had a Valvoline filter put on by my oil change shop and the sound stopped for a few days. Then on Friday I heard the noise again and had a full oil and filter change. Today I got the sound very briefly when I first started the car. I thought maybe it was a valve noise? A partially clogged oil filter will restrict oil flow to the top of the engine, so that might be the cause of the noise, but I can never replicate it when someone is around to hear and give some insight. Someone said that it might be the oil pump and to have Honda check it out. Also, I remember getting a bulletin from Honda a while back about the ABS system making a noise at startup while it resets itself or something. I have never noticed the sound before and it is bothering me. Also, I started using Lucas gas treatment (upper cylinder lubricant) at the same time I had the Mobil 1 filter put on and have been using it ever since. I have never used the Lucas product in my car before, but I used it all the time in my old 91 EF and never had noises or issues. Any insight is appreciated.
LOUDER AND HARDER!
if it's not getting any worse, and no side effects... i'd say crank the music!
(it works on my steering creak!)
6 Great speakers, Dual Sub Box + 1600+ Watts could do the trick!

sorry- i'm not good with computers... maybe i'm doing the IM's wrong?
i have IM'd many people here, but only 1 has responded, and that was months ago...
so i gave up trying to im people...
but as far as the noise, i've never heard of it.
i would have someone get under the hood WHILE its cold, and then start it...
and try to isolate where the sound may be coming from...
sorry i don't have any other (GOOD) advice, but i'll pray for you and the car!
God bless!

I have the same exact situation! I was like WTF. It sounds just like a engine grinding. If you click the key over and let the engine light click off, if wont do it.

Does the oil pump start pumping before the engine is cranked? Maybe the oil pump starts pumping and gets oil to the top of the engine in the amount of time for the CEL to go off??
