Default does anyone else change there oil filter from the top?

i was too lazy to climb all the way under tonight changing my oil. i then realized i could just get to it from the top. its not supoer easy, but it works.

is anyone else as lazy as me, or am i the only one doing it this way?

Always gone from the bottom. You might as well, your down there anyway to get to the plug. Seems simpler than straining from the top.

Isn't it really messy if you do it from the top?

always done it from the top, hate the idea of havin oil spill on me or my face by accident underneath. it does spill a lil bit of oil around, but nothing a quick wipe with a towel cant remedy. only precautions is to be careful of the sharp parts when ur pullin it out so you dont stab/scrape your arm/hand on anything.

when i do it from the bottom, i always end up covered in all kinds of stuff some how.

i can reach the drain plug without climbing all the way under. the only thing is i still have to jack it up cuz my catch pan doesnt fit under now that i lowered my car.

Agreed.

It's really only possible from the top if you dont have PS. Unless you have little guhhhrly ahhrms.

Hey man, stop me if I'm wrong but from what I remember there's sort of an alternator, power steering pump, intake manifold, strut tower, so on and so forth in your way, no?

It's not the easiest filter to access from the top, that's for damn sure. I change mine from the bottom. Damn, I'm quite sure that if I tried to access it from the top I would have no luck and if I actually was able to grab it I doubt I'd be able to apply much torque to remove it - unless it's got grip tape - but even then, when your arm is bent the torque you can make sucks.

i hit it from the top, its a lot easier that way seeing you dont have to jack the car up as high or use jackstands/etc.

How the hell is the ps pump, strut tower, and the alternator in the way? Assuming the you look at the engine like a compass the ps and alternator would be in the southeastish part of the engine bay, while the oil filter is in the north. (I know that's a lame way to describe it but I don't think I have to post pictures to explain)
