Car is all stock except greddy header and greddy exhaust.

Problem: Car feels sluggish some times. Like it's being held back. I think it's pulling ignition timing. That's what it feels like. I drove a dsm that had knock in the past and it feels the same. Does this car have a knock sensor and could it be pulling timing for some reason. I know that knock sensors go bad and can read knock that really isn't there...


Any help on this would be useful. I'm an eg guy so I don't know much about this new stuff.

Oh and the car has a cel for code P1457 Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) Control System Leakage (EVAP Canister System) but that can't cause this problem, can it?

 

Almost any cel light will put the car into dummy mode, which makes the car not perform the fullest of its abilitys, i would fix the cel and if the car continues to fill that way then perform a tune up... spark plugs/cap-rotor button.

 

not what I want to hear! haha that is like the worst cel to diagnose. It would be just the vacuum lines or the canister it self. I may take it to honda on that one. They can do a smoke test and try and find the leak. I'm beginning to lean toward distributor. My friends crx did the same thing. As well as another friends eg hatch. both where distributor problems. I'll know for sure as soon as I check my ignition timing. There's were both at zero at idle with the dizzy all the way advanced. and it should be at +14-+16 i think

 

i forgot to add.

When the car engine is cold it runs like a champ. Like it should. Pulls like it should (well pulls like a b16 ha). As soon as the temp gets to normal temp it starts running like crap again. I figure this has to do with the ecu being in a different mode while the car is warming up.

 

When is is cold it hasn't gone through a cycle that checks the sensors. Once it warms up it does it's first cycle and then you get the CEL. Then it runs in Limp mode.

 

so i need to get this cel taken care of? hopefully that will be the problem

you need to get EVERY cel taken care of dude

 

that's the only one. plus i can reset the ecu and it might stay off for a week or more. but one day it comes back on. even with the cel not on it still runs sluggish.

No it wont. This is a common misconception. Honda has a very liberal attitude towards CELs. It's not a VW or GM. It will usually run fine with a CEL on for things like EVAP. It goes into limp mode for very critical sensors when it has no choice. IAT, MAP, TPS are examples. Critical fuel deliver sensors only. They will usually even run fine with a bad knock sensor.

OP: try doing a tune up.

 

thanks for the info. will do a full tune up this weekend. doing the engine timing next weekend. just bought 330$ worth of timing stuff and brakes from honda.

Alright so I did EVERYTHING dealing with just maintenance to the car. Plugs, wires, dizzy cap, rotor, timing belt, water pump, valve adjustment, fuel filter. Now the car runs like a champ!

But I still got that damn EVAP code. Which I live in MS so it doesn't matter, We'll be the last state to ever get emissions laws, and when/if we ever do it's going to be a huge redneck revolt (rednecks like to ride around in there big truck to NO exhaust)

I've been driving around for almost 5 months with an 02 sensor cel that comes on for about three weeks then turns off after a while then comes on again. Car runs fine certainly not in limp mode. Just waiting for my tax return to repair the header and cat back.

 

my o2 sensor wiring got riped out somehow its still go strong except horrible mpg and that rich smell. Yes im replacing it soon and tips to get that bad boy off
