What is this on my distributor cap?
I know. Most expected me to be asking about some kind of "red" coating inside my cap or something, but instead I have a very random noob question.
I recently got a new distributor cap and there was a little plastic cap covering a hole between the little nubs that hold the wires for cyl 1 and 3. I have worked on many different cars from MGB's to 300E Benz's and I have never seen this little cap before. I simply removed it since I never saw it on my dizzy before (have since put it back on since most people have it in pics of their engine bays...).
Now for the question, does this have any particular job regarding the dizzy's functionality?
I know noob *** ****...
Heres a pic for referrence: http://www.cranecams.com/image...).jpg

NOt exactly sir...its actually used for a coil..you know, like if you get an MSD coil ignition..give out more sparks to the dizzy for certain motors..i do believe.

I would have to say that would take the place of the internal coil.
That is why it has a post where the internal coil goes. What he is talking about is a palastic cap between firing posts for 1 & 3. All dizzys i have worked on have this n it looks like a vent.

I never have. If it's a one-way vent, I really don't think you should, either.

I don't balme you for thinking that, you've likely seen alot of caps that look like that in pictures, those are aftermarket parts from aftermarket companies like msd that you get.

True, i have seen the aftermarket ones also that look very similar on certain dizzys...so what exactly is it then?? Because some are saying that its a vent, others a coil...which one do YOU think it is?

OK making it harder than it should be. the cap between post 1 & 3 is a vent. This cannot be used for a coil. The extra post is on this picture besides the firing posts. http://www.cranecams.com/image...).jpg
This extra post makes this internal coil an external coil for use with msd ext....
