Hello all, I just picked up ANOTHER Honda today... a 1996 Honda Civic CX hatchback and for some reason, the rear trunk door wont stay shut! I slam it down all the way and it bounces. I was looking at the latches and I don't know what to do nor look for. I tried playing with the "trunk open" lever near the driver's seat and I don't know what to do.

Check if the latch is sticking. It sounds like it is getting stuck in the open position and when you shut the hatch it just bounces back because the latch is not trying to grab.

+1 the same thing happened to my hood

 

The latch isn't sticking. The spring is functioning and all, the latch just doesn't "lock" . ANyone else? BTW, thank you for the replies.

 

Wish I could help. My hood does the same thing and I have to stick my finger down there and move the tab back to where it's supposed to be. I'll probably just have to replace the latch instead.

sounds like the same issue on a different part of the car. give it a try.

 

i have a STOCK flat black BRAND NEW OEM ek hatch (just the HATCH BARE SHELL) only. you will need to transfer glasses, wires,... to the new one.

Oh, and as far as my hood, I've replaced the cable before. It's not that. For some reason it's always been kind of stiff compared to what it should be. It's almost like the two springs within the latch are backwards. The one that should be tighter is looser and visa versa.

When I pull the tab inside the car, the latch doesn't spring back to it's original position.

You should be able to (at most) fix this by replacing the latches. You won't need a full hatch.

 

go inside the trunk with a flashlight, and ask someone to close it couple of times, you will find the problem right a way.
but i also think its the latch, might be too greasy and not allowing the latch to lock down.

 

The latch is probably already closed. With a screw driver, try to rotate the striker in the latch while someone hits the release in the car. It should flip open and you should be able to close the hatch.

 

I appreciate the replies from everyone. I will try all of the above when I get home and i'm going to try to take some pics of my latch. As far as the guy selling his, $100? There's some on ebay for $30 shipped for what I need. If I can't fix it I may just buy a new one.

 

I believe he was trying to sell the whole hatch assembly. I say go ahead and replace the latch. GL

 

I don't know what I did. I stuck a flat head inside the latch mechanism and kept poking things, then I slammed my trunk and voila, it latched.

 

You might have moved that piece I was talking about. Make sure it keeps shutting right. It might need it done all or most of the time.

 

I you open and close the hatch repeatedly does it work every time? Thats cool that it fixed by messing with it a lil.
