Default Are any Civic rally cars AWD?

I've seen quite a few honda rally cars on youtube videos lately. Most of these are civic hatchbacks. I was just wondering if any of these hondas are AWD or what? I havent found any info on this site about how to convert a honda into all wheel drive. The general opinion i get is that it is not an easy task. I do remember a while back though, that Honda Tuning Mag tried to convert an Integra into AWD using CR-V parts and it somewhat worked. So maybe it is possible...

In JAPAN I know they offered a 92-95 Civic with AWD, as well as the DC Integras as well.

those systems were not very strong and not very popular, hence why they never came state-side and are EXTREMELY rare even in Japan.

FWD works just fine on rally courses, A number of Peugeot's and Renault's have been rally racing FWD cars for years. I know of several Neon SRT-4's and Hyundai Tiburon's that can be seen frequently on Rally tracks.

IIRC, there was a Citroen that ran FWD in WRC in the late 90s. Sure it didn't win all the races, but it did good.

Its all in the driver

They're probably all FWD.

The problem with the CRV trans was that it couldn't take a lot of power. It is pretty much a truck trans that was only made to take about as much power as a B20 can put out. I think the weakest link for the CRV trans is the diff.

I've heard of the Integras, but *Civics*? Are you serious? Post a link or send me a PM if you can. I have to see this...

Has anyone seen this before? Would be interesting to see how it all hooks up. I'm assuming much like a crv. Just found it interesting that it was awd. I thought only the 88-90 or so wagovans were the only awd civics out there. Maybe someone could do a conversion if they had too much power that a fwd could handle. Just a thought. </TD></TR></TABLE> my good friend found this.

For 5th and 6th gen Civics there was the RTi available in Japan. The RTSi was also available for the 5th gen at least. There was also the same trims available for 4th gens, and also AWD USDM 4th gen wagons.

I haven't heard of a 7th or 8th gen 4WD Civic yet though.

I'll be damned. After Googlization I have found that an RTi does indeed exist. I had no idea. I guess that's why I am here though: to learn. Thanks!

Yep. One of the easier ways to point out an RTi is the rear wiper. And they're always sedans for the 5th and 6th gens.

If you want to learn more about the models that were 4WD, you'll want to look up the following cars.

EH1
1991-1995 Civic RTi / RTSi / RTX 4-door Ferio (Japan and possibly parts of Europe?)
AT/MT
ZC
1.6L SOHC non-VTEC

EK5
1995-2000 Civic RTi 4-door Ferio LEV (Japan)
AT/MT
D16A
1.6L SOHC non-VTEC

EK8
1995-2000 Civic RTi 4-door Ferio LEV (Japan)
AT/MT
D16A
1.6L SOHC non-VTEC

EU2
2000-2005 Civic G4 3-door hatch (Japan - possibly a sedan version too?)
4AT
D15B
1.5L SOHC non-VTEC

EU4
2000-2005 Civic X4 5-door hatch (Japan)
4AT
D17A
1.7L SOHC non-VTEC

Still haven't heard of any 4WD 8th gens, though I wouldn't be surprised. Also, as far as the reliability and strength of the drivetrain go, I've heard many times that the drivetrain is weak, but no one has actually ever even SEEN one of these cars, much less driven one or modified one.

The drivetrain of the 5th and 6th gens is somethign like 80/20 front/rear though.

pretty cool civic rally car article (FWD):

Also, a friend of mine drives an AWD wagon (90 I think). Its a D16A6 (Si motor) and the torque split is massively biased to the front. We have no way to measure what it really is, but thats what it feels like... all push and no oversteer, like an FWD, except that it'll move out with very little traction.

He keeps joking that he wants to put the drivetrain in a CRX for a mad auto-x car - but the drive shaft looks pretty spindly as do the rest of the AWD components.

there are awd honda projects in the hybrid forum i dont any of them are used for ralling though

crv- del sol
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/1708933

twin h22 del sol
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1266033

awd ef hatch
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=2182882

4wd crx
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=2060180

it can and has be done but i dont think any of the honda oem 4wd/awd systems can handle the stresses of a racing application

personally if i were to do a 4wd honda race car i would biuld the tranny and replace the diff and do and all motor h2d wagovan

None of those cars are All Wheel Drive.

The front drive Civics/Honda are very competitive in the two-wheel drive classes and even against all-wheel-drive cars.

We've beaten a lot of WRX's, etc. over the years.
