Default Searching for "bang for the buck" audio system for gutted crx

Greetings, I have just taken interest in installing a sound system in my '91 crx dx. The trunk(back) is gutted. I still have my door moldings on.

I have talked to a friend who works at an audio shop and he has recommended:

A KD-AR780 receiver, 2- 6.5 Diamond speakers up front, and a 10" woofer powered by a TMA 4 channel Amp.

He offers this installed for 700 bucks. I was interested in installing it myself. I searched for the same products he offered and found cheaper prices online.

So here's the deal, I want a good system, as good as $600 can get me and I will install myself. What do you recommend? I would especially take interest in info from crx owners. I would like an amp and a 8" woofer(preferably) or maybe a 10". Thank you

If someone has personal experience with a certain system they strongly suggest for a "little" more $$$ my ears are opened.

I found these parts:

Component Speakers: http://www.onlinecarstereo.com...18359

Amp: http://www.onlinecarstereo.com...16333

Receiver (Cd player) : http://www.onlinecarstereo.com...17996

Do I still need the sub really? I thought the 6x8's had a nice bass section. Ill Just select one if this list is close to completion. Im also thinking of using a 6.5 inch component speakers setup with an 8inch sub.

Good HU, Speakers are OK but will need custom speaker housings to fit a 6x8 into the doors, [but not impossible].
I am no fan of Hifonics amps. 94

So what am I getting from a $220 HU that I wouldn't be getting out of like a $170 HU? And what about those SP6500 speakers turns you on? I found them on shopaudiovideo.com for $80, my friend is hesitant with anything priced too low and says good speakers are probably not available for less than $100. Thanks for your help by the way

Your friend doesn't know what he's talking about. Most of the the cost associated with "high end" speakers is all marketing. Take MB Quartz for example worst bang for the buck IMO that you can find. I think most of their speakers sound like garbage.

Not all speakers are created equal. And cost isn't everything go listen to a set and let your ears decide.

I've been thinking of putting a nice little system in my CRX as well, and after looking around I decided that this would do nicely:

• Sony CDX-GT520 head unit
• Polk Audio DB6501 component speaker system (front)
• Polk Audio DB651s speakers (rear)
• Polk Audio 8-10" subwoofer (1, "trunk")

Crutchfield has a lot of "Buy one get the second half off" deals, in which case I was going to ask if I bought the component speakers, could I get the other speakers half-off. If they said no, I'd just buy a second set of component speakers and run them without tweeters in the rear.

Obviously, I haven't picked out an AMP yet...

I found the DB6501 speakers for $130 at: http://www.sonicelectronix.com....html

I'll now take these speakers into consideration.

__fcm, do you have any insight on the Polk Audio db6501 speakers?

IMO polks sound flat and not very crisp. You need to go listen for yourself though. Holding yourself to a 100+ price point is rather dumb IMO.

A $300 speaker does not guarantee it's better then a <$100 speaker.

If you are not an experienced installer and don't plan on becoming one, I would recommend getting a professional installation. The difference between a professional install and an amateur install is the same as the difference between chocolate and ****. A good install is often worth more than what you are charged.
