Default 3m plastic coating on CF hood?

I recently purchased a genuine VIS CF hood, and the trees at my house drop huge amounts of sap, i mean like dime and nickel sized globs.

Someone i know suggested having the hood wrapped in that clear 3m plastic that they are using on the new cars at Honda. My mom has it on her accord over the front, to protect from rock chips and stuff, they offer a lifetime warranty on it too.

Anyways, i know a guy that can wrap my whole hood in the stuff, i was wondering if anyone had any input on the matter.

Yeah i know how you feel. First off you got to find a shop first before you can start. Im sure if you talk to the owner they can find a way to do it.

Yes they do full 3M bra for the whole hood but only on some newer cars

Realistically it will probably be easier and cheaper to simply have a body shop put a couple layers of clear coat on it.

The clear plastic won't keep the hood from yellowing but the clear coat will. Probably run
$100 to have it cleared with a good clear by a decent body shop.

100? good clear? probably no.

depends on the condition, you gonna have loadz of work prepping

100 bucks, maybe if all the prep work is done and you'll get some omni transtar clear

Well thanks for your uneducated post. A GALLON of PPG clear runs about $220 here in Florida. I spray an entire car with about three quarts.

LoadZZZZZZZZ of work prepping it? All it needs is a scuff with some 320. Maybe ten minutes at most. Any shop could put it in the booth with another car and clear it at the same time.

Either garage it or dont park it under trees. Or a cheap way would be to just buy a car cover and cover it everytime its going to be parked under tree for very long. Kind of a pain tho.

you got to be high or something

have you heard of something called overhead?

does your shop runs without insurance? you don't have to pay for your equipment? you don't have to hire guys to work?

material cost=/=final cost

10 minute of sanding sounds perfect but you are not dealing with a new hood bro, have you seen hood that are wrapped from the heat? how you gonna get rid of the low spot in ten minute. sure, you'll get a 10 minute prep job once a while, pray hard and wish every single job is that smooth and easy.

you are looking at at least one min hour of work, right?(assuming there's no major prep work) how much your shop charge for an hour of work? 80? 50?

no disrespect but let's be real

If you read the OP he says that he just recently purchased the hood.

Now I could be wrong but I would think that he meant he bought this hood new.

And if you read my last post you see that I said a shop could put the hood in the booth with another vehicle and clear the hood at the same time as they cleared the other vehicle.

This would eliminate the need to mix clear just for the hood, it would eliminate the need to run the booth just to spray it, it would cut down on the time the booth would be unable to be used for another vehicle, and overall it would cut down on the time needed for clearing the hood since you wouldn't be waiting for just the hood to tack off.

Overhead? Yes I have it, a new hood isn't going to need an hour of prep work. Even if it did my labor rate is $40 and hour. That's what insurance pays me and that's what I generally charge the customer.

So let's say theoretically it takes half an hour to prep it: $20
Let's say I put three coats down and use half a quart: $27.50

That is $47.50. If I have another $20 in overhead, I still make $32.50 on the job.

I'm not saying every hood is this way, but if I have a new hood and something that is in the booth ready to clear, I see this realistically as an easy way to make $30-$50 and make a customer happy.

Obviously I would need to look at every hood individually before I gave an actual price quote but I think $100 is more than fair.

And no disrespect here either but I'm just being real and showing you what I would have in it.

I totally see how putting another coat of clear would work. but the op sounds like he is going to continue to park his car there. so either way the clear would be getting messed up.

Not true. As long as he keeps it waxed it should be fine. Seriously it wouldn't even need waxed but maybe every two or three weeks as long as he washed it regularly. And NO dishwashing soap. Use a high-quality car soap.
