Axel Problem
i used the search function and still wasn't able to find anything on this potential problem. I am looking at buying a 96 EX with a GSR engine swap from a guy and he was talking about when the car idles, clutch not engaged, it makes kind of a metallic rattling noise. Says it isn't the muffler but what he did say was that it was because the car had been lowered 2.5" and since the axle is at that angle it makes that noise due to the difference in ride height. I would appreciate it if anyone can help me out on this potential purchase.

NO ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if the car is in idle and the clutch is not engaged, sounds like a clutch problem to me, HT would you like to help!
yes if the car is lowered the axles are at some what of a angle. but it will never make any chattering noise, let alone on idle. now a clicking noise when making turns, but that's when the cv joint go out and that's on any front wheel drive car, lowered or not.
i'm sure 100% that guy is try to pull a fast one on you. i would stay clear of him.
probably needs a clutch. but since he's selling it, he doesn't want to spend the money.

He also said that you can't hear it in any other gears while moving, but at a dead stop. Yeah, I am searching that right now. He also said the car drives fine and he has driven it for 6-8 months with no problems. I'm searching TO and Release right now, hopefully it isn't a bad problem because I'm supposed to meet him tomorrow to possibly buy it, ha ha, he just mentioned this today.

yeah the bearing works together with the clutch. if you still decide to buy it, try to get him to lower the price since you have to pay or do the work yourself.

He e-mailed me pictures of the GSR trans and engine and says he has receipts for the work done on both rebuilds. Crap, I'll keep searching.

Yeah, the price is a little high @ $7800, especially for a 96 EX but it does have the GSR swap with documented 60K on engine and trans, and a Si int swap. Now I am becoming unsure of myself, I know a little about hondas but some stuff is over my head.

I realize that and I'm not going to give him that much. The stock car prices at 5,900 in exellent cond. I'm not a complete idiot, I'm just wondering if this is a serious problem, like it's going to break on the 2 hour trip back or if it will be fine or if it is going to break.

why don't you just buy a stock 96 ex then buy the motor and do the swap yourself.
that way you know everything is going to work fine.

Is the motor stock? Clean title? If motor is stock and only has a swap w/ basic bolt on's. And a basic lowering kit. I would say that is to expensive. I would say that car is worth no more than $4,500-$5000.

Title is clean, B18C1 engine, GSR trans, fixed lower I believe. Ac works, PS works, CC, and so on work. This noise is pretty much the only thing wrong. From what I have read so far on other posts it seems to be a TO bearing, which is like 50, and it seems to be a 50-50 chance that the car will take a sh*t on me.

Because I don't have a garage and don't want to pay for shop hours, instant gratification vs hole in wallet.
I don't plan on giving the guy his set amount and he said it was negotiable so we will see.
My reason behind the interest in the car is that I wanted an Si but people ask way too much for them and it is hard to find a clean title one, this is pretty much the same thing, minus the possible TO bearing problem and not 10K. Yes, it is expensive for the model and the problems but I'm not going to pay that much, *sigh* we'll see. I'll keep looking.

WOW! 10K for a si. i guess inflation is bad in WA (for hondas).
down here in the dirty dirty (FL), they run for about 7K-8K, with a clean title.

Yeah, no kidding, I kind of want to move to east side of the states, well take this one for example http://seattle.craigslist.org/....html, it's $7500 with a salvage title. It is rough pickins around here. I have been searching for a car for about a year and in this state, this is a fair price. I'll meet him tomorrow and we will see how things go, crap now I am nervous. LOL.

This explains it best, from CarFax's website,
" Salvage Title —
A Salvage Title is issued on a vehicle damaged to the extent that the cost of repairing the vehicle exceeds ~ 75% of its pre-damage value. This damage threshold may vary by state. Some states treat Junk titles the same as Salvage but the majority use this title to indicate that a vehicle is not road worthy and cannot be titled again in that state. The following eleven states also use Salvage titles to identify stolen vehicles - AZ, FL, GA, IL, MD, MN, NJ, NM, NY, OK and OR."
Pretty much it is difficult to sell at the KBB or NADA price so it is pretty low. Vehicles that have been in accidents and totaled by insurance, and restored can also fall into this category. LOL, I realize my status says I'm a noob but I have been researching this stuff for awhile, so I know what I am getting myself into when looking on craigslist.com. Some people will try to pull fast ones on ya, so I am being careful; hence, my original question. Until I hear the sound for myself I can't tell. I did find some threads about throw out bearings and one person was kind enough to incorporate a video with sound, so we will see. To me the car isn't a good deal and isn't really a really bad one but I'm still in pending. I liked the fact that it is an EX and shows up that way on insurance but is in essence very close to an Si, and without the 10K average price tag. I could be making a really dumb mistake or just a purchase. Either way, the friends that have converted me to Honda in the last year or so know what they are doing, I just couldn't get a hold of them and though I would start some threads and become more active. Not to mention it is always sweet to hear others input, as long as I don't get flammed for it, ha ha. See ya'll around and thanks.
