Default Has anyone here painted their own fairings?

my bike is a lil roughed up, and the sight of it annoys me, plus i've always wanted white. I'm planning on doing a rattle can job.. Has anyone here done it?

-how does the paint hold up to flexing/chipping?
-how shiny did you get the end product to be? (rattle canning clear coat kinda sucks)

If not.. i guess my next question is does anyone know a good shop to paint this thing for me for cheap. IN SOCAL! OC area!

A great part of it depends on how much time and effort you are willing to put into the paint job. If you are willing to go to the trouble of meticulously sanding it and spraying, and repeating the process until your hands are raw and bloody, it may not look bad at all.

Ive got a buddy who's entire back half of his car is rattle canned, and if not for his terrible perception of color when buying the paint, and consequently the two different shades of white that meet in the middle of the car, you can hardly tell the difference in the quality of paint

My buddy just totally repainted his 600RR because the guy he bought it from dropped it and it was all scratched up and cracked. He bondoed the cracks and sanded everything way down. Then he used a flat black on the whole bike, about 2-3 coats. Then he taped off the bike and sprayed the white honda wings on ( he messed up the one line, if you can tell) . Then he got this triple clear coat spary and put 3 coats on it, it is super thick, glass looking. He also bought some stock vinyls for it off ebay and some vinyl strips. Overall it cost him about $50 and it looks really really good for the cost.

Also plastics were just placed on not bolted on, thats why the tail is a little off, just feel for what it will look like

i don't recommend rattle canning it. i've done it and it only looks good for several days, and then dirt and dust will start collecting onto the paint surface and that it starts looking like ***. just get a cheap paint job at the least.

I've done my own paint on two bikes with spraypaint. both bikes turned out great. my 89 GS500, when I had it was spraypainted green, granted it had like 20 layers of paint and a ton more freakin clearcoat on it, but it looked good.

you can make it look good with spraypaint, but it takes a LOT of work to make it look that way.

When you rattle can a bike, even if you use a rattle can clear it will NOT hold up to gas. Just keep that in mind if you ever get gas anywhere other than inside your tank.

best advice i can give to rattlecanners is keep it simple. the more complicated you get, the more disappointed you'll be when it doesn't quite work out or you spill gas on it. starion is exactly right about canned clearcoats, gas > clear from a can.

imo, the key to nice rattlecan jobs is to use a flat base color (black works best, but everyone has flat black canned plastics) and to do the prep work (sanding, filling). use vinyls or stickers to break up the color or add contrast and paint them wheels gold or orange or somethin.

the beauty of flat rattle can jobs is that you never have to wash your plastics again. stain? just respray it.

it'll never be all that pretty but, hey that's what you get for beatiing up your plastics!
