Default Del Sol clutch safety neutral switch

Helping a friend work on his 93 Del Sol earlier today. His starter was covered in oil (from a damaged distributor o-ring) and we decided to go ahead and replace it. Swapped the new starter in but still nothing. Car doesn't even try to start. Battery is not a suspect right now since it's only a few months old and was good enough to power everything else and even start my RSX. In the name of troubleshooting I removed the clutch safety/neutral switch. Looks like there was two of them. One is pushed in when the pedal is engaged and the other when it's not. WTF? Anyway, I brought both home with me to check resistance on the pins for both them. Both switches read wide open with no pressure and 0 ohms once I push them. This is weird to me since there is always an "open" regardless of the pedal's position. Anyone know if that's how these switches are supposed to work? I'm just trying to figure out what the problem is. Tomorow I'm gonna run a wire from the positive battery terminal to where the black/white wire with a spade connector would normally connect to the starter. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated by myself and the owner. Also, I checked the 7.5 amp fuse under the dash along with the fuses in the engine bay. All were fine and had the correct fuse installed. The car does not try to turn over, much less start.

You need the switch that is pushed in when the pedal is pushed in, the other one is for cruise control. Test for continuity when the switch is depressed.

Ahh, that makes sense now. I'll reinstall the switches and make sure some more of the switch is exposed. I held the switch down with my finger but the car was still unresponsive. Thanks for that info about the cruise control.

I had some trouble with the clutch switch on my sol a few months back. Like you, i thought it was the switch itself, but that tested out okay. It turned out that one of the connectors on the driver's side kick panel had gotten out of place - I removed 'em all, then plugged 'em back in firmly and things worked. There's also a connector you should check up near the clutch & brake reservoirs .

Have you verified that the starter cranks when you apply 12v to the solenoid terminal?

I'll give him a call and pass this on. The starter is completely unresponsive. It's been raining lately so I haven't had time to go check out the car since Monday.

Is there any click at all? No clicks sounds like a starter. Sometimes starters are dead from the start. Take it out and get it tested at (v)autozone

check all of your grounds. if youre getting nothing when you try to start it im pretty sure that could be your problem or either your main relay.

I just finished replacing an LS's motor, and forgot the BIG ground cable on the trans. It would sometimes let the main relay/fuel pump run, but no click from the starter. I bolted it on and vroom! Sometimes the little solenoid clip on the starter can be corroded and/or loose (or off!), so check that too.

One more thing to look at is fuses, as well as your battery connectors. I've had a few batteries showing 12.5v, charge fully, but not have enough to move the starter because the connectors were not contacting well. One just needed the whole possitive cable & connector replaced.
