Removing Window Tint

Well, this is basically my first DIY tutorial. I have been wanting to remove my old tint so I can put new 5% tint all around, but I'm a bit short on cash since I'm only 16! I thought hey, why don't I remove my tint myself, and save myself about $100-$150? And this is what I did! Thanks for reading, hopefully this will help YOU!

1) Start by gathering your items!



You are going to need

i) All-Purpose Spray Cleaner
ii) Garbage Bag
iii) Scissors
iv) Tape
v) Newspaper or similar
vi) Paper Towels
vii) Goo Gone

Start by masking just below the window.



Spray the inside of the window with windex, or similar.





Now grab your garbage bag.



Take the windex and spray the OUTSIDE of the window as well.



After spraying the window, place the garbage bag on top of the window and you can cut it to a decent fit. I used some tape because it was a little windy outside today.



Now let it sit for 20-30 minutes in the SUN!

When time is up, hop inside the car and with your knife and pick at the corner of it.



It might be stubborn, but keep picking at it and once you get a grip with your fingers you can start pulling!



Keep pulling!

Clean-Up Time!

Grab your Goo Gone and preferably an old t-shirt of some sort.



Pour the Goo Gone onto the shirt, and scrub, stay persistent and you will see the left-over glue and residue starts to go away!

Once you do all of your windows, your car will end up like mine did!

You have now successfully removed your tint without ruining your defroster and using any blades!

Looks like the Goo Gone worked a ton better than goof off when I did mine.
I'll have to try this when the other tint comes down.

This is a damn good DIY. Been thinking about removing my tint and having it redone come summertime.

 

So the garbage bag warms up the tint and makes it easier to remove?

Goo Gone &gt; Goof Off...good to know! I'll have some old tint to clean off myself if I get this EJ I want.

Is there any suggestions for deteriorated tint?

Same thing applies, except it will not come off in one big peel!

 

Did some of the defrost copper for the rear window come off?

 

I use a razor to take off the tint, didnt use just the razor but the part the razor goes on. Took me about 30 to take off 3 windows. But still havent taken the rear off, beacuse of the defroster , Im going to try this on the rear.

No, my defroster works flawlessly! Nothing was damaged at all and I like this method a lot better than using a razor blade.

 

i use a razor also, peel the tint soak the residue thats on the window with some glass cleaner and wipe off with a towel for the back window i do the same but use some fine steel wool wipe the window and knock some of the glue off then just wipe with a towel the steel wool doesnt hurt the defroster

Guys, this can be done with a blow dryer as well! Everything applies, except instead of letting it sit in the sun you heat the hell out of it with a blow-dryer.

Haha, what happened to me is that is wasn't that hot yesterday, and I wasn't really planning on doing my rear window. So I'm like whatever, the it was pretty cold now and the sun wasn't doing anything to the rear window so I grab an extension cord, my moms blow-dryer and get to work. It's REALLY easy, and not that time consuming at all.


P.S. I'm getting my car tinted today! Yay! 5% in the back and 10% in the front.
