? about bearing clearances
ok my NA ls vtec took a ****, it had a slight rod knock so i tore it apart and #4 rod bearing was tore up. it wasnt spun the tabs were still intact, but the coatings were all skrewed up. anyway my machinist thinks i had to tight of an oil clearasnce or an oil temp. problem.......all my clearances were between .0015 and .0019...the motor had about 1500 miles on it and i took it to redline frequently....it was dyno tuned and pulled hard all the way to 9500...does anyone think my clearances were too tight, i dont want to screw it up again when it reassemble it...nobody thinks an oem gsr oil cooler would hurt do they?
yea a new itr oil pump, from jhpusa.com, i cant take any pics cause the motor is at the machine shop right now....they also called me and said to look for a new crank because mine was cracked on the same rod journal as the problem.....i ahd the crank maged before the first build to, so this is leaving me wondering .....wtf
Its highly unlikely there was a problem with a brand new OEM pump, but just to be on the safe side, whenever I am putting together a new build weather its a brand new pump or reusing the old one, I always take the pump apart and measure all the clerances with a straight edge and feeler gauges---then fill it up with vaseline--better safe than sorry.

yeah...so you cracked your crank where you spun a bearing?
could the machine shop tell you which went first

no no no, then bearing wasnt spun, the tabs were still perfect. it just looked like the coating was coming apart he said maybe from a tight clearance or a oil temp problem.... i was using eagle rods with the big arp rod bolts. like i said could i set the clearances a litlle losser than stock?ill also be using and oem oil cooler this time
i was using bearings clevite bearings... iam getting the rods reconditioned and i think ill using the bolt strech method this time....still nobody has commented about the oil clearance....i mean im not doing a stock rebuild and maybe.0015 is to tight for revving so high...i dont know someone throw in some experienced knowledge
generally you aim for the .0015" region for all journals but you said you had .0019" that seems a little loose to me...dont go by plastigage for results its generally good for only double checking buy/burrow a 1-2" .0001" mic and a decent 2"-6" .0001" dial bore gage they will look after you and will indicate any out of roundness incase you need a tunnel bore hone invest now save later i say good luck comrade cheers
i had all the journals mic'd....and had the big ends checked on the new rods....im just wondering wtf happend to expletive the bearing up and crack the crank on the same journal, maybe a defective bearing?
