Default how can you tell if a LSD is working properly?

ive been running a obx lsd for over a year now with no problems.. i was just wondering if it was still working properly. here is the thing. i was at the track yesterday and broke my fidanza axle because i forgot to preload on the launch for some reason. my mistake. first axle ive ever broken. well i got a new one from oreilys, and broke that one midway through a burnout. stripped the inner joint on the drivers side axle. somebody took a picture of one of that burnout and only the drivers side wheel was spinning and smoking. now im wondering if maybe something happened to the lsd or not. if one axle is broken the car wont move correct? does anyone know how to test the lsd while its in the car? thanks. i dont think anything could be wrong with it but im just paranoid as to why that one wheel wasnt smoking and if that has anything to do with that new axle breaking.

i have tons of pics of my other burnouts if you want to see them.

I guess just make sure they both spin under load, such as the burnout.

well ive seen open diff. cars spin both tires..

i just spun both my tires.. but they werent both spinning in the pic of the burnout i last did at the track.

on jackstands, car in neutral. spinning the passenger side wheel will make the drivers side spin in the same direction. spinning the drivers side doesnt not move the pass. side.

in 1st gear, spinning each side makes the other side spin in the opposite direction.

this mean anything?

I believe both tires should spin in the same direction when in gear. I seem to remember that when we were playing with the VSS on rota's car.

After all that is the purpose of the LSD.

Did this person take a picture while you were doing the burnout that snapped your axle? LSD's work under load, when torque is applied, the differential locks. Spinning the wheels while the car is on jack stand won't put any load on the differential. Take off from a dead stop with the wheel cranked the whole way to the left. Take off a little aggressivley to get the wheels spinning, not a huge burn out. If they both spin, the diff. is working. You could double check by turning the wheel the whole way to the right and repeating this procedure. An open diff. won't allow the outside tire to spin.

well i have heard it both ways... so i dont know.

im trying to remember but i did this a year ago when i put the lsd in and im thinking it spun in opposite directions in gear but cant remember 100%

but there is no noises or anything, drives fine..

yea i believe the pic was from the burnout that i broke the axle on but was right before the axle broke. i saw the pic and was like wth..ive always spun both tires ina burnout.

ill see if i can find someone to watch the wheels and give that a shot what you said..

I don't have obx, I have a factory lsd and in first gear on jack stands the tires turn opposite from one another. GL

im pretty sure if your diff was broken, your car would not move at all, just like when you have a broken axle.

thats what i would think.. but i didnt know if it could be barely broken at all and just not function right and still drive fine..

like one of the many little gears inside or something...i forget what they are called.

im probably just being paranoid like i said

With my CTR tranny, LSD was most noticeable in corners. If you loose traction into a corner, the car would "hook" quite hard. Whichever direction the wheel was pointing when the car hooked is the direction you were going. Quite nice but it could also be dangerous when messing around also!

when the car is on jack stands and you start turning one wheel the other will turn the opposite way.

thats correct.

I would think if the diff broke your car wouldnt have even made it to the track to break the 2nd axle

gotta consider the fact that one tire may have been more wet than the other during your burnout, producing more or less smoke than the other...

What does it mean if I spin one wheel and the other spins the same direction?, I'm pretty sure I have oem lsd, but I never seen my b16 tranny spin opposite from one another?
