Default GSR Rod Discoloration???

What would cause this? Just the heat of an all-motor, high-compression setup?

Anything to be really concerned about??

It had obviously gotten hot. google what heating metal up does.

When some idiot torches a rod to get the pin in or out, thats what it looks like. So that rod got hot.

If in doubt, throw it out.

yeah metals can/do get weaker if there heated to really high temps. would you call this annealing or is it a process or hardening/chancing properties of metal or would annealing make metal more soft or ductile?

If that's a floating pin rod than you have a problem. If it's a press fit rod than don't worry about it.Whoever heated it to install the pin got a little carried away.I have seen hundreds of rods that look like that and none of them failed.

The rod is attached to an Endyn Rollerwave, which I believe are press fit... The piston doesn't move on the pin at all...

That's a problem, the rod is press fit onto the pin not the piston. The piston weather stock or forged should move freely on the pin.

I meant that it doesn't move side to side at all, but now I'm confused... I'll have to check them out when I get home...

Oh that's ok, the rollerwaves have circlips at each end of the pin which would limit side-to-side movement. Does the piston rotate on the pin?

The piston pivots forwards & backwards freely, I just don't know if the piston is moving on the pin or if the pin is moving in the rod...

I'll have to look closer tonight...

They heat up the small end rather then press the pin. I have seen countless rods like that with no problems. I heat them up too, but not to the point that it discolors the rod....

And make sure they didn't also put the clips/locks in.Like i said ,I have seen hundreds of rods assembled that looked that with no problems. It was done with a torch most likely and not an electric rod heater.I have seen people also use the spiroloxs and that usually ruins the rods or cranks if the pins weren't perfectly centered.
