POS auto tranny
I have the wonderfull automatic trans in my 01 ex. the car has 105k. i am not sure if the fluid has ever been changed. when i called the dealer they told me that i could make a little problem worse by changing the fluid. should i chance it and have i changed or run the stuff that is in there?
so in other words they told you to keep the 105,000 mile old fluid in there because if you changed it, you might have problems with new fluid being in there? so when are you exactly supposed to change it?
i've never heard anything like that, i dont think new fluid would damage anything, it would make it better, i'd think...?

i thought that new fluid would be good too but the guy told me it is a judgement call on my half.
btw the tranny slips just a little when cold and works better when warmed up.

Why not just do it yourself??? If you can change the oil, you should be able to drain and refill the tranny fluid.
I would be worrying about the dealership "messing up something on purpose" so you have to pay for an expensive transmission replacement. But I tend to over worry myself....

Just go down to the dealer and buy the amount of Honda ATF you need. You may or may not need a new drain plug washer. You may want to research how it is done just to make sure. But I'm sure you just drive it to normal operating temp, drain old ATF, replace drain plug (washer), fill to specs, start up and verify level is correct. (I've read somewhere they they recommend doing a complete flush at 90K miles. drain, refill, and drive (3 times))
Whenever I get around to doing mine I might write up a walkthrough with pics, b/c I think many people could benefit from it. But I just had a new A/T put in last month so it might be a while.
for Honda's crappy A/T

There was a TSB/Recal on my A/T. When I put it in 'D' it would take a few seconds to actually put it in Drive. The Green box around the 'D' on the dash would flash while this was going on. And most of the time it would just slam it into Drive all of a sudden. It happened 3 times over the course of a month. I looked up the TSB and my VIN was listed on the years affected, took it down to the dealer, and they replaced the A/T for free (it was still under warranty).
But I don't know how trustworth the A/T was they put in...oh well

I take it you found the drain bolt
I just changed the oil in mine and peeked around and saw the ATF drain bolt and was going to post and tell you where it was, but it looks like you beat me to it!
Just make sure you are not too low or too full on fluid...for some reason Honda recommends us checking it with the car off, but up to the normal operating temp.
Did you use a new crush washer b/c mine looked like the same crush washer as the oil drain bolt?
I'm not sure how mechanically inclined you are, so I'm just reminding you of a few things.
How'd the fluid look when you drained it???

Oh and if anyone wants access to the TSB (or any other honda's for that matter) pm me and I'll tell you how to get to them...
Matt is going to be posting them all up sometime...maybe

Yeah the guy at the dealer is right, in "some" cases, replacing tranny fluid with that many miles can cause more damage, most often they would take out the old fluid run it thru a filter then put it back in because it has been in there so long that new fluid might damage seals or clutches in the tranny, it has happend and then in other cases new fluid has helped as well, so its ur call on what to do. Im approaching 50K my civic and will replace it then to ensure long life in my car, but my car is a 5spd.
