Default Oil Pressure

Hello, I am new to this board. I have a 92' Prelude with a JDM DOHC F22B swap. The motor has 2,500 km on it and runs fine.

My oil light keeps coming on when I am idling. It doesn't come on fully illuminated though. It is very dim and goes away when i give it a little throttle. I had this problem last year when i fried my old F22B motor. So when I rebuilt the one that is in the car now. I changed the oil pump, water pump etc.. Everything on the motor is brand new except the sensors. But my car does not throw any codes what so ever. A friend of mine thinks it could be because my idle is too low. The car idles at about 700 RPM, but its hard to tell on the gauge.

I was just wondering if anyone on the board has ever heard of, or had this problem before.

- I checked under the car and there is no signs of any leaks.
- My oil pan is dent free, and I personally installed the oil pick up. I check for clogging and dents when I rebuilt the motor 2,500 kms ago. It was working fine when installed.
- I checked the oil pressure switch with a multimeter, and It is fine.
- I checked the oil level and topped it up.
- And i turned my idle up to about 950 RPM

The light has gone away. So I took it for a half hour drive. And everything seems OK. No oil light. I am changing the pressure switch anyways, just in case. They are only $50.

any other suggestions?

when you put the oil pick up on there did you use and gasket sealer or a gasket.

I just used the gasket that came with my bottom end gasket kit. everything has been torqued and installed according to the Honda Prelude shop manual.

Best suggestion is to get a real oil pressure gauge to see what the true oil pressure is. The OEM oil pressure switch turns the light on at very low oil pressure. Around 7.5 PSI.

make sure your connection at the oil pressure switch is good.

Agreed with checking the oil pressure switch.

i have checked the switch. and the connection is good because when the ignition is turned to acc and not running the oil light comes on. When the car starts the light shuts off. the light doesn't come on anymore. I'm worried cause someone on a another forum posted this;

"I'd keep the $50 and I'd instead borrow a gauge and actually see what the pressure is, instead of hoping there isn't a problem. there are other things that cause the oil light to come on besides the ones you mentioned.

every car i've seen that the oil light flickered on at idle was becasue the oil pressure was starting to drop off from worn bearings that slowly f@#$%d everything else up as they kept dicintigrating. revs hid the problem by rasing the pressure above the warning light setpoint"

I have an oil pressure gauge. I am waiting on a dual outlet 1/8 Britsh thread to 1/8 National thread reducer, so i can hook it up. I think I'm gunna hold off on driving it untill i get the coupling. At least that way I can monitor the pressure levels.

I ordered it from steathmodeperformance.com

This may be a dumb question but, do you think I may have already caused some damage when I went for that 30 min test drive?

I have the same problem as you man, mine flickers slightly and I have no idea what it is. I had a complete rebuild and I am trying to figure this out myself, my mechanic said it might be mechanical, but it makes no sense at all. I'll tell him to check the oil pressure switch connection, any other suggestions all? I want to solve this as much as the OP.

BTW my mechanic said he checked the oil pressure when it flickers and normally and he said it looked good, but I want to check it again.

It sucks that I spend all this money for a rebuild and the car still ain't done!

I feel your pain this is my second rebuild. And the first time started with an oil light flicker. And the motor blew at 508kms. Thats why i'm nervous now.

How long has the oil light been doing that to you for?

Well I'll be damned. I was trying to think to figure out what the OP's situation could be...
And guess what. Sitting in traffic today, my idle seemed to get really "dippy" and my oil light comes flickering on.
Getting it rebuilt Monday anyways, I'm going to see if the engine builder will replace the oil pressure switch and see if it does it.

Your light only flickers after the car warms up for a while right? My first 10 mins of drive it doesn't really flicker (city driving), but after that I'll see it. After my rebuild, the first 500 miles didn't have this problem, but then I began to see it.

here guys....lets all just cut the nonsense ****...sorry for my boldness here...

But i mean cmon people...Go buy a friggin oil pressure guage for 20-60 bucks...hook it up..

My h22 at dead cold start up idles at 68-70psi
when it is at full operating temp (water temp is 180) and oil is at full temp it IDLES at maybe 17-19psi..

Honda OEM spec for it is at full temp at idle WITHIN spec is NO less than 10psi, and at 3000rpms steady..NO less than 50psi...

So go buy a guage and hook it up and check and make sure you're withing spec...Problemo solved y0!

installed the oil pressure gauge, when the car is at normal operating temperature i am running at 4psi, obviosly too low. i'm going to try to change the oil filter. does anyone on the board have an F22B? if so, which oil filter are you using?

I'm not really experienced with this sort of thing. Possibly a clogged oil passage?

Have you tried replacing the sensor?
