overheat at stop and at speed
im having some overheating problems. i have replaced the thermostat, and it has fresh prestone 50/50 in it. problem is that it tends to overheat after i drive for a while and then come to a stop, i have traced that back to my fan switch. however i noticed today it was getting hot while cruising at 80 on the freeway.
i bled the system by idling the car with the heat on high and jacked up the front end. the weird thing was it took over 30 min for my bottom hose to heat up as much as the top. could it be my radiator is clogged slightly? it was a junkyard unit from when my front end was repaired.
thanks

did you bleed the system properly? what i like to do is let the car cool down, then start it up, open the radiator cap and add more coolant until topped off.
also, have you considered the radiator cap? might need a new one.
do you know how to check to see if the fan is working? make up some jumper wires. make sure they are long enough to reach the battery. if the fan kickes on, then it's either the switch or the relay.

yes i bled the system properly and i already stated i had traced part of the problem to my fan switch.
however, i had not considered the cap.

if its a junk yard radiator id replace it. there are some things you shouldnt buy from a junk yard. theyre not that expensive new. but you bottom hose should get hot later than the top. because thats where the cooled, coolant goes to the engine. and the hot coolant from the engine goes to the top of the radiator. you shouldnt need your fan unless the car isnt moving. driving should be enough air to keep it cool with out the fan.
yea, it wasnt my choice, car was pretty badly damaged. about 4500 dollars worth. i priced out a factory replacement for about 91, also i have never had to bleed a cooling system for more than half an hour, im thinking i may have a flow prob, in the radiator causing this.
bump, i jumped the fan switch plug to run the fan constantly. i still overheated at a stop after having driven around for about 30 min.
