Default where is your temp needle?

i recently installed a new fan switch and my temperature has been climbing to maybe halfway...since i bought my car about 2 years ago, it has never never passed a quarter, and about a week ago the switch stopped working so obviously my fan didn't go on either, but before my fan switch wasn't working it has never passed a quarter

my car feels weird and sometimes starts pinging just a little bit

the needle now is about right under the halfway point, and starts lowering when fan goes on to quarter or maybe less but then starts climbing again, my car feels very slow and doesn't have that pull when the needle hits close to the halfway point

can it be the thermostat?

Where does the needle point when cruising on the highway?

highway about close to half, and freeway about quarter and somtimes even halfway

traffic, almost half, and at 65+mph, about a quarter

It depends on what thermostat setting you have. I have an autozone one at the moment at 160, so I would assume yours is OEM?</TD></TR></TABLE>

I have seen mine up to just a touch under 1/2 when it idled in a parking lot for 10min or so.

I would assume if you go much past the 1/2 way mark you should start checking into cooling system issues.

WOW.... im really surprised that ppls temp is at any times less than half. If my car is fully warmed up then driving, either freeway or street, its ALWAYS on half way. Only once it went to red but it was just a hose. Fixed it and its back to normal now... halfway all the time.. weird

That sounds like a bad thermostat due to the fluctuation. Was it normal for your gauge to read 1/4 previously on the freeway? The fan shouldn't matter much at 65+ MPH.

The needle postion is gauge dependent. The gauge does not provide an actual temperature, i.e. 180 deg. F.

might consider also replacing rad cap with new 1 from honda to go with new thermostat ....flush coolant and make sure u bleed it from air bubbles and see how it works u should be good unless u have other problems.

ok so i just replaced the thermostat, the temperature is still where i don't want it to be...car feels better though

but that is just soo weird that when i bought my car about 2 years ago, it has never been passed a quarter...ever!!!

and now it just stays right before the halfway point, my idle is still very low...

When I first got my 94 gsr back in 98, the temp needle would always be slightly under the half way mark on the cool side. My radiator eventually cracked and I had to replace it. Ever since then, the needle only goes up a qtr of the way inbetween the cold and middle.

so it could be my radiator???..

might be because i changed the radiator not too long ago and when i installed it, my fan switch didnt work and now the temp needle reads this....hhm and the radiator i have now was sitting in my friends house for a while

I had a similar issue where the temp guage fluxuated a lot. turned out the radiator had a leak at the top tank where it connects to the core. some fluid leaked out, and the system couldn't pressurize itself, so it never could maintain a steady temp. got a new radiator, and temps were steady again.

check your coolant levels, and radiator cap.

im guessing from the replies that 1/4 past cold is normal? i've noticed mine is most of the time only about 1/8th to 1/4th past C. parked with the car on it's been almost to the middle.

What kind of thermostat are you running? If it's a colder one, then it will open up sooner meaning your temp needle will be more on the cold side

the thermostat i bought was a "low temperature" one...

and the needle right now isnt moving from little under the middle, bought like i said before, i felt a power loss from where my needle should "used" to be, about exactly 1/4 of the gauge, to where it is now...it just doesn't feel the same like before, i checked all my lines, everything is good, no leaking whatsoever, what can it be, my car feels like it weighs 5k, and when on the freeway, it feels like it lags...

it's idling very wierd....when i put it in nuetral, the RPM will drop to 500 then it will settle at 7500, but then when im at a complete stop, it idles at 500-600

anyone please tell me what it can be!!!!!!

I know my integra didn't make good power on the dyno until it was completely warmed up (like 3 pulls). If your car can't come up to "normal" operating temp, the ecu runs it in open loop mode. Its possible that you can't reach the proper temps with that thermostat unless you are driving hard, or are in very warm weather.
